Title: A since of scale
Post by: Khalee1 on April 25, 2009, 07:15:28 pm
I've kinda gotten the scratch building bug and am wanting to try some scratch building but the only real scales that we know is the D7 and the Connie, and the War Eagle. Now in comparison what size in 1/1000 would the Hydran Ranger be, or the lyran heavy cruiser. I've chosen those two because they are simple shapes.

According to history  Hydran ships iare10% bigger than there neighbors, So would I make it about the same size as the Connie, And I have no Idea on the Lyran. And If I did the Gorn heavy cruiser would it be bigger than the Connie.

Woundering about this as I've never been very good at how to scale things to where they look right.

As far as I know there is no SFB canon scale. I use the SSD and the drawings in the R section. I make the Ranger to be about 350mtrs long, for what ever it's worth. ;)

Well, I suppose you could buy all the minitures from SFB and measure them.  :D

From GURP MODULE PRIME ALPHA:

Hydran Ranger Heavy Cruiser
Hull Volume:  8,500,000
Loaded Mass: 157,000
Size Modifer +12 (Which in GURPS is 200 yards / 600 ft)

The Paladin is SM +13 (300 yards / 900 ft)

Lancer Destroyer is SM +11 (150 yards / 450 ft)

Gendarme Police Ship is SM +10 (100 yards / 300 ft)

Hydran Stinger II Fighter is SM +5 (15 yards / 45 ft)

For comparison Klingon ships:

B10 Battle ship is SM +13
C9 DN is SM +13
C7 CH is SM +12
D7 is SM +12
D5 is SM +11
T7 Tug is SM +12
F5 Frigate is SM +11
E4 Escort is SM +10
Z1 fighter is SM +5

Take that as a rough (very rough) size.  as a B10 is not the same size as a C9.  Still have to tweek the size but does give alittle scale.

No but I'll bet all the windows on these ships ar the same size. The site the hunt down fact about the shows use common features like that for scaling purposes. Takes some time and math but you can't go wrong there.

Remember this data is approximate there is a wide range between Size Modifers.   And since SFB was brought up these are some of the know figures I had handy, I'm sure there are a few other sources but I would have to hunt for them.

I'm assuming the R sections of the SFB rule books might have info on some of the ship classes, and the SFB Captains Log magazines on occasion have articles on different ship classes/types.

For example CL#6 has an article on the B-10.

Deadweight Tonnage (metric) 332,500
Length overall (meters) 363
Beam overall (meters) 345
Height overall (meters) 132

So you can see even the creators of SFB aren't consistant.  Plus SM +14 is 500 yards / 1500 ft.
