Title: Cranky Old Bastard...
Post by: Atolm-Rising on June 13, 2009, 12:54:56 pm
This is basically my idea for a real early(first generation or something) Battlestar.  The ship is essentially like an old spanish galleon, with all the creeks and bends.  The FTL Jump Drive would be shotty at best, and took considerable time to do the calculations, and get the engines primed.  Multiple sequenced jumps are practically out of the question, and the ship might implode.  If you look at the details of the vessel, you'll notice a lot of stylized hull markings and panneling (like the "rising sun" on the carrier pod's side).  This was again done to show the ship's age (think old sailing vessels).  Internally, the ship would have support struts, and hydraulic reinforced structures everywhere, and would be much more spartan than the Galactica.  Overall the ship is about 80% of the Gal's length, but is roughly 50% of her width(hull wise), and 60% of her height.
Anyway, here she is:

Looks pretty cool. Are you doing a top angle illustration? I'd like to see other angles, too. :)

interesting looking thing. Maybe the rising sun pattern would actualy be a ship specific thing (not class) then you could give it a WW2 jap ship name like Hiyo or shokaku since it's technicly a carrier..

I like it, but can't shake the "Battlestar Gothic" feel.

Here's an Idea that I had:
A Colonial engineer had a concept to develope the next generation of warship called a Protostar.  The Protostar was to be a mobile battle and staging platform.  More capable than the battlestars, with their proposed cabability to handle more auxillary craft and fighters, as well as act as short term starbase.  The main problem that arose was its means of propulsion...  The Protostar was just too complex for "standardized" and "normal" propulsion reactors and assemblies to accomodate.  Several different approaches to the engine design difficulties were tested in simulations, but all were deemed subpar to the established battlestars.  The project was shelved...
Years later when war with the Cylons first broke out, in the first strong push into Colonial Central Space, the Colonial navy was face to face with a ship that echoed passed impossibilities... the Protostar.
The vessel launched wave after wave of Cylon attackers overwhelming their former masters, taking their first major victory in the Human Cylon War.

Ouroboros-Class Protostar:

Noice. I bet it was even designed/commissioned by the Greystone corporation.
