I payed damn near $500 for a student copy of max4 i lost in a fire last year sucks to see one can get max 9 or 10 for less than $200  ANY one test this to see if its legal?

Read the FAQ area and look at the bad english, it is questionable.
The one that says you don't have to register the product (they already did) because it is OEM makes me think it is not legit. it could be a corperate licenes don't know.
Do I have to get registered on the manufacturer's web site?
No, you don't need to because this is OEM software. Our company has already registered it and so there is no need to do it again.
I need a license agreement. Can you send it to me?
No, we do not send a license agreement because it is OEM software.
As far as I know you get a agreement with every software purchase OEM or not, it is one of the things you get at the beginning of the install. Either way I would not be ina rush to do business with this site until it can be researched out. They could easily install tracking software as well as remote access software inside that zip file.

Looking at the Credit card and personal info FAQs, I would stay away from them.

I wouldn't touch that place with a thousand mile pole.
Consider your personal security before you do anything.

Software-4-You? the only way that could be worse is if it were "Software-4-U". I'm with the guys, I wouldn't touch it.

Why get an old copy of Max? You can get any software to model and render in. As long as it exports to .3ds you can import it into Gmax to export it to .mod. If we start creating i/o plugins for Gmax that work for commercial formats you might incur the wrath of Autodesk.
Just be careful with older copies of max trying to license them. I know that candle_86 got Autodesk to transfer the license for the used copy he got, but that's the first time I've ever heard of anyone having success getting Autodesk to do that.
Another problem you can run into is Max 5 won't run on Vista. The license server won't pass Vista's security. I don't know if it'll run on Win 7? Possibly not though.

The buisness phone number is a cell phone from Staten Island, NY. Also has an address listed in Austin, Tx. Very Interesting. Yellow pages of NY doesn't show the buisness either.
-
Probably won't run under Windows 7 natively, but Sentinel drivers *may* install under the Win XP Mode (which is a VM) and if they do, that should allow Max to run under it.
But you're then looking at a machine that supports a 64 bit architecture, plus hardware virtualization, plus matching the memory requirements of Windows+Virtual PC+3dsMax. So, you'll be looking at a high level machine at that point.

Well that sucks i didnt know the licence was stuck to the orignal owner . I guess my options are done then gmax it is, thats almost worth retirement there alone mix vista with gmax = alot of crap files that wont open. Oh well.
Tell to tell you the truth i miss knowing what the hell to do in the maping areas. In max 9 demo uvw unwrap is all diffrent and so is alot of other stuff + max 9 is damn near or over $6000 last time i looked. Gmax is holding me back cause i cant get a decent render so i can make some 1/2 ass detail textures. I sure the hell dont want to learn blender just to get a render im not geing payed for this yet i dont think i ever will be good enough + its not worth the personal cost or loss of famly time to pay more than $1k on a hobby i think.

Well, unless you want to pay for max you aren't going to get it, unfortunately. There are actually better modeling programs out there. Max is way to plugin dependent, which introduces bugs, instability, and crashes. Modo is a far better program. It's $1000. I use Cinema 4D. It's way easier to use than any other modeling program. If you can use Milkshape and Photoshop you can learn C4D pretty easily. The basic package is also $1000. You can spend more for more features, but a grand will get you everything we use for game modeling. For free there's blender and there's also Softimage Modtool. It's an amazing program! Seriously, I wouldn't buy a program today for game modeling. I would just use Modtool. Any of them will export to .3DS and then you can use Gmax to export to .MOD. You'll have to learn any of these other programs, but once you have I think you'll find any of them easier to use than Max.

Damn we need those Blender scripts, must take another look at it soon.
On the topic of Max and Autodesk's Draconian licensing (and malware enforcement of it):
http://yro.slashdot.org/story/09/09/30/159232/Company-Uses-DMCA-To-Take-Down-Second-Hand-Software
I'm glad this issue hit censordot. Perhaps Autodesk will take notice and wise up.

Having Blender scripts that export to .MOD and break mods would be a good thing to have.. it'd let SFC modding become a little more cross platform.. (and I'm still looking to ditch Windows personally, I just keep it around for Max at this point). I can run Paint Shop Pro under Wine now, and unless I want to run a cracked copy of Max.. I have to have the Sentinel drivers installed, which pretty well dead-ends for Max at XP. :p
