Title: Oberth Early
Post by: candle_86 on September 27, 2009, 12:53:02 pm
Well the NCC numbers are in the 500's so that puts the class at least drawn up around the early 23rd century to late 22nd century, so here is my look at what she may have looked like then. The shuttledeck extending like it does I chose for purpose and reason. But I will probably remake it anyway

That's very interesting, nice work. I never thought of a TOS-era Oberth, but it works.

Its very hard for me to see what is going on - primarily because of smoothing, but for another because of bad lighting. Put a key and a fill light in the scene and then rerender - fix your smoothing groups too.

I would give the saucer less of a toroid feel, too.

well im rebuilding the engy hull anyway, but id except the same same way they do in the normal one, that is get to the lower decks, through the warp nacelles lol. Though im thinking about something diffrent

Warps are still a bit to large for my tastes for its class but good job so far.

Are those dishes and bussards yours?

You might want to learn to add a taper to your cylinders - a straight cylinder looks okay for a daedalus, but makes a mesh look very amateur-esque on anything later.

The Oberth really doesn't work as a TOS ship.  However, if you are insistent on trying it out, make sure the Nacelles are above the saucer.  There has to be a way for the crew to get to the turbolifts in the Pylons, in your current version the Nacelles are in contact with the Saucer, leaving no place for the Lift shafts to get to the Pylons, and into the engineering deck.

actully i cant get it to work like i want so im tearing off the enginerring neck, leaving saucer and naelles. Gonna also round out the bottom of the saucer to make it a sphere, and pull the warp engiens a little further away.

Yes both grahpics are mine, i have the original PNG if you want it. I look clues and ideas looking at other models but the dish and nacelle i made

That makes more sense. Now you can add the lower hull attaching it also to the nacelles, if you want to.

ok went for more of a dadalus tapered back but alot more primitive. Of course this thing is from 2180's not the 2280's

Actually, I misspoke. You need to attach the engineering section so as to allow access between it and the primary hull without going into the nacelles. That looks like how you have it. Hard to tell from that angle.

edit: I can see the 2nd pic now and that looks good. You might want to do a bit more design work on the engineering hull though.

FW - I don't like the meat-tenderizer look of the back of the nacelles. Furthermore, the nacelle struts that lead from the sec. hull to the naelles don't look particularly stable - they look squiggly.

Definite improvement over the start.

Suggestion (take it for what it's worth).  ;)

If you could raise the nacelles above the saucer line and closer to the primary hull, plus shorten the secondary hull in the front and lengthen it in the back, you'll pull this a bit closer to the TMP Oberth in my opinion.

I'm attaching two quick mockups to give you an idea of what I mean.  ;)

Again, just suggestions..
