The movie Astronaut Farmer. said it all on personal space flight got to have BIG $ to make it legal and all.

The Ares I? More solid chemical propellant rockets... same kind we use on models virtually. No big loss if you ask me.

"$95 million a month on Ares I." For ANOTHER solid fuel rocket. Well, they're getting ripped off. Bad. Everyone loves to rig off the government and them complain about it.  ::) :smackhead:

It sucks more that Project Orion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Orion_(nuclear_propulsion)) never came to fruition, or Project Prometheus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Prometheus) or Project Daedalus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Daedalus) or Project Longshot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Longshot) or ...

No, we're going to buy more perchlorates. Wonderful. Brilliant.  ::)  Somebody must have an awful lot of it to get rid of.

Honestly, until all the hippies croak, no one will do anything with Nuclear Propulsion.  It might be worthwhile, just to see his reaction, to write to President Obama and tell him that one of those projects might be the perfect way for him to achieve his Nuclear Arms Reduction goals.  But unfortunately, such a letter is unlikely to get to him, and if it does, his reaction is not likely to be seen by anyone except his new Chief of Staff.

I consider myself part hippie. (old school) I am also a major proponent of nuclear power. AECL (http://www.aecl.ca/) rocks! We are the best and have been missing the boat on guiding the world to abundant safe clean energy. Chretien started taking the right steps and Helmet-Head (Harper) is too timid, we have not been doing the hard sell we should be.

Its not the hippies for the most part its EPA and other regulations that claim what is possable if one of those blew up in the atmosphere. Blame lawyers  the true EVIL ;)

Don't forget the fact that there are competing industries that don't want clean power.  Existing power plant operators don't want to be replaced.  Coal mine owners don't want clean nuclear replacing them (look at the radiation that comes out of a coal power plants stacks among other pollutants).

Politicians who don't want to see their districts companies (coal mines and coal power plants) replaced by modern nuclear companies elsewhere.

I'm sure that all these fight very dirty behind the scenes and that if we could trace the money a lot of the "protesters" against nuclear power are funded by these sources.

Regarding nuclear power plants.  A major factor that you guys don't seem to consider is NIMBY.  You can talk about how much cleaner and environmentally friendly nuclear power is compared to coal all you want, but I doubt you'd be gung ho for it if they wanted to put one up in your locality.

As said is so! I live on one of those so called safe traffic areas where nuke waste is transported. Safe my ass the 75 mile or so area that is called a hasmat highway is among the most deadly in the usa. It wont be long before there is an issue with the truck transport of waste the way the state gov deals with this hasmat highway. 1 lane and every one passing on the right when someone turing left, even highway patrol does it. Head on smack down with a nuke waste truck behind you to play end game for the community area?  I say if they got a plant dig a damn hole and put the waist where the plant is not transport it 2000 miles and rist others. But lawyers say so so they do and we deal with it

Nope. I've worked at an AECL made research reactor. Power generation scale in my backyard? That would be effing awesome! I would be proud and feel completely safe. (not to mention financially secure) Plus, it would keep the simple folk away. ;)

We are lining up huge uranium mining in my region. Couldn't be better news. I guess it is clear that our obligation to education by example has not been enough.

When they build a reactor that can be safely operated by someone with a sixth grade education I'll change my mind.

Why on earth would you want a sixth grader to operate a nuclear reactor? Can a sixth grader operate and maintain an oil/coal fired steam turbine? Should they be able to?

I could have run a CANDU in the sixth grade with proper training, and perhaps there are students today who could as well. But not all of them, never. That will never happen. (only in the minds of the mothers of handicapped children...)

Saying I want the reactor to be capable of being run by someone with a sixth grade education is code for saying I want it to be completely idiot proof because it only takes one idiot.  I won't accept a nuclear power plant near me until I'm absolutely sure there's no way they can screw up.
