Title: 2 models with problems..can anyone help?
Post by: Starforce2 on February 15, 2011, 11:27:48 pm
I've got 2 models I am trying to make use of. One is the avis, the other is a klingon fighter by FW.

The Avis has some type of mesh error that causes the ship to mostly dissapear ingame when ported to BC. The mesh errors show up, but I don't know how to fix them. I've tried a few people, and every time they export to 3ds it seems to have more errors not less and the textures go kaput. The Klingon fighter has an opening in the mesh on the back wing. Is anyone willing to look over these models and see what can be done about them? I've got the OK from FW to get the fighter fixed.

Stop exporting to 3ds. Its a buggy format that doesn't work well at all. Try OBJ format.

I'll check them out.. still have my old trusty rusty Max 3.1 here..

(edit: try these.. all these seemed to retain materials once exported.  Haven't tried to import them back into Max yet though).

ps: OBJ here didn't seem to retain materials, which is why I have things in the format I did.  ASE seemed to work well though..

Max3 has a build in option to import/export obj-format, i use it now instead of the 3ds-format.

I wonder why I can't export to obj then? It doesn't show up. Wonder if it's because of the textures being tga at the time, or the fact that I loaded a .mod file? Wierd.

I get the same result, no materials with OBJ.  That's why I exported what I did as I did.  :)

Anyone look at those yet?

"Older obj files can crash or wont work the uvw correct ", Quoted from a thread i looked at a few years ago.  Wavefront or some company simmler name owned obj format for a while and those issued for free formats crash or wont properly save the uvw in the mtl file. Was the standard free obj plugin for atleast a year.  Newer files work because the format was purchaced and fixed i belive by autodesk.?  But they wont work in older formats of max .  Or  Gmax them bastajazers :hoppin:  Max 7 or might be 8 i dont remember it all was said to have the "working with no errors" obj plugins but i have used max 5 standard obj said to be made by wavefront or whoever plugin with no issues so its hard to say whats true in net world. I want a WORKING OBJ export plugin for GMAX! Free should rule dagnabitt!!

the only avis I got to work was the mod file. I get improper file formatt on the lwo and ase. Though 3d exp will probably take care of the lwo I'd still end up needed to make a 3ds out of it. I'll convert and try them both, if I get time, later tonight after work.

sorry my fault but there is no obj-export option for 3d-Max 3, i do  this with milkshape3d. such confusion happens if you use 3 programs to make your models.
The Avis should be no problem, as i used unwrap3ds optimisation tool on it and it didn't find anny mesh errors or faulty polys. Maybe the problem is that it uses multi parts with different materials that have the same texture file.
The fighter has only simple modelling errors, poly vert's not connected to their parts and such.

yea that could be why it doesn't damage right in BC. Wonder if it can be fixed? I'll test the one alec gave me and see what I get.

The klingon fighter is now fixed, but there is another error or one I simply missed before with the right outboard pulse cannon. Looks like inverted or missing poly. You can just export as a mod file if it's easier. But the major wing issue is better. I'll keep ya posted on the avis.

ok, the avis class still has the same problem where it dissapears in BC. There's got to be something wrong with the way it was constructed to cause this and I am still hoping someone can fix it.

I'll spend some time on it and see what's up.. I just ran some quick fix ideas on things before between "honey-do" items.  :)

yea some of the BC guys are wondering if it's a win7 issue..so I am going to test the original, your recent one and even one terradyne threw at me on my xp machine and see if the same issue happens. The neck pipes come off easily enough but something seems to be the matter where the nacelle nacelles connect to the bottom plate. As I need to head over to the other machine due to missing the minow class in the last batch of mackie stuff I'll probably do it then which might be tonight or next couple days. Somehow I doubt it's win7 since none of the other ships have the issue except the king condor from D2.
