A few questions if you please.
I have a Westinghouse monitor that I'll be needing to change out capacitors soon, So I'm wondering about a good cheap desoldering pump, and curious to know if Weller is still the choice on an Iron in the 15-30 watt range.
So I bow once again to your experience here guys. Only 8 capacitors that I can tell. But with the No Signal input unless the LCD runs awhile , and then I reboot, I figure it will be easy surgery.
Needless to say, the last time I had to work with Solder and a circuit board, was on the old C-64 Video Ram chips. A year or two ago to say the least.

I much prefer a braid wick to desolder, and the iron doesn't matter too much so long as it is hot enough and you can work well with it. I like the pencil style.
Replacing caps in a LCD monitor though? How old is it and what makes you think the caps are the problem? (and why not ask in engineering?)
If the last board you worked on was from a C-64, be aware of the newer surface mount techniques and component densities. You might find yourself unable to do the job without the factory tools. (nothing is made to be repaired anymore, shoes being the classic example, everything is disposable, sigh)

Anyways, Sorry Bonk, getting back to you bro.
I think the Caps are the problem, because it is a common occurrence, and Something is keeping them from holding a charge , if the monitor is turned off for very long. All other checks I have done, eliminate everything else, except maybe the mofet (sp)ion the board. But yeah, I've checked Video cables, Power cables, and they all work fine, even on other monitors. It's just this one that I was going to throw away anyways, unless I can get it to run consistently.

But yeah your right, it's been a long time since I did any solder work, so I'll prob. take a few practice swipes on an old Junk MB or something laying around.

Sorry I didn't get with you last night, I'm still recovering from the music conference..and if you don't think a bunch of Christian musician's can't hoot and holler, well, we all love playing...
So any ways, I am with Bonk on the soldering wick...it provides better control, and can be reused as weight in homemade fishing lures

I would say that the iron does not matter that much as long as you keep the tip clean and free of any solidified iron. I have used lead but it smelled kind of funny which turned out to be bad for your health. As long as it melts properly, the medium you would use is irrelevant. Desoldering can be done either way but I till use a desoldering pump for this.
