Title: Win 7 Home Security 2012 virus: need some advice
Post by: NJAntman on December 28, 2011, 02:05:55 pm
Got calls from several freinds of friends who appearantly have been hit with "Win 7 Home Security 2012 " virus. Common denominator seems to be lack of updated virus scanner and facebook use. Found a site that has a detailed removal procedure but as I don't use that site myself I need to know is the site legit and/or do these instructions seem legit.

The procedure involves dowloading files FixNCR.reg & Rkill which I have never used, but I currently use MalwareBytes.

Link to the site instructions: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-win-7-home-security-2012 (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-win-7-home-security-2012)

What say you?

Yup, thats what it takes. I would also suggest afterwards you 1) scan with AV, Malwarebytes, scan for rootkits, and 2) install updates...

Regarding updates: not to dis any particular kind of browser/software flavor, but I've seen poeple get this using Chrome AND IE, etc... Thus my take is just update whatever it is you use OS and browser...

In some cases, with repeat offenders (people who have a habit of getting this bug somehow by the sites they visit, and yes it can happen other ways than just 'the typical' sites) I suggest they get a subscription to Malwarebytes (or try that free trial for a while). Its drastic, I think, to pay $$$ and it running on top of AV, so it slows things down, but its the only way for people who just keeeeep getting this bug. And for some reason this bug invites repeat offenders... So I would view the Malwarebytes subscription as a very last resort.

As of yet, I've not had anyone come with it again after these preventative step... but you know how this battle goes...

the real problem is this once you are infected and clean it off it leaves security holes that you will not be able to close.
the safest way to do it is remove he virus(s) and them format and reinstall everything and the updates.

Sucks to do but it is the only way to be sure.
