I just spent 45 minutes trying to thwart a virus take-over of my puter..
DO NOT click the link on Drudge with the report of the Giant Squid.... !!!!!
As soon as the page loaded my Malwarebytes alarm window popped up but before I could click "quarantine" the virus not only shut that program down but it corrupted the program files. It also prevents the use of the task master and will disable safe mode start up.
It's called the FBI Moneypac Virus ..... and it's a bitch to kill.
I thwarted it by starting the puter than instantly hit the "stand-by" instead of "shut-down" ... this gave me the seconds I needed to start system restore and go back a few days .... it tried to prevent that and the puter froze momentarily but it worked. Once on I had to re-download Malwarebytes and it is presently doing a full system scan.
Bastages !!

They must've updated it. My dad's PC got that one...hehe boy did he freak...only difference with the above was I had no trouble booting to safe mode and once there Malwarebytes killed it.

Is it in the form an email, a web pop up?
Adam
No pop-up ..... I have disabled pop-ups.
It was somewhere on the page .... I must have moved the cursor over some text that was actually hyper-text and it downloaded and launched the execute file.
This newer version prevents safe-mode start-up and will disable virus protection by corrupting the program files.
It's lighting fast.

I was so angry I felt the veins in my neck.
This thing takes over administrative rights .... the fine they demand to unlock the puter is 400 bucks.
You can guess what I said to that.

Did you get the full screen "FBI Notice" and locked up machine bit? ;D That thing gave me a wtf moment...then I scanned the text and started laughing.
Were it not for the baggage that comes with removing it it'd make a great prank to play on someone.

It was a full screen block with the FBI logo .... seems they thought I was a bad boy and deserved to have my puter blocked.
It warned me that failure to pay the fine would result in my arrest and imprisonment.
Heh !! Come and get me MOFO !!

ROFL Yeah that's the one. Had the same reaction, told my father that he'd know if the the FBI believed he'd committed a federal crime because they'd be knocking at the door...if they bother knocking...not sending some ridiculous "cyber-block" and demanding a cash card from Walgreens.

Sheesh, that one sucks big time. Glad you both got it fixed though.
