Been a Milkshape user for some time now and was intimidated with 3D Max. When Mr. Vulcan from the Armada community made a new SOD exporter script, I began to slowly tinker with Max as I was intrigued with making animations for the Armada models. More recently, I have kept my eyes on Phoenix’s Vor'cha Attack Cruiser over at BC, watching the build process with great interest. I certainly found inspiration from seeing all the detail go into that ship.
Well, the time has finally come for me to give Max a try. But which ship? I wanted something that wouldn’t be too hard and had good reference material. Plus, it couldn’t be a Federation design. The choice was made … the Romulan Bird of Prey. I look forward to hearing your comments and critiques. Not sure what the poly count limit is for SFC but this one is quite heavy (20,592 triangles).

Thanks Tus. The quality of those videos are excellent to be sure and needless to say are great for a beginner. He uses one tool, Turbosmooth, that is impressive to say the least. I could see endless possibilities with subdivision modeling. Unfortunately, I dodn't seem to have that modifier in the version I'm using (5). After I have watched the videos through, I will try experimenting and see if there is a similar functionality in version 5.
Here is a wireframe of the Bird of Prey. Like I said, this was designed to be a learning experience for me.

if you don't have turbo smooth, you could try meshsmooth, it has a similar function... not sure if it will work though.

Very nice work. :)

I think I’ll declare victory on this one and move onward and upward. I accomplished my goal of making a complete model in 3d Max. Being a Milkshape user for several years, I was intimidated by the thought of using Max but that fear has now been conquered. Without question, I learned a lot in the process. In many ways waiting this long to try Max was even more problematic. I’d watch a video on Youtube only to find out the version I’m using didn’t have that functionality. :( But even in this simple example, I got to experiment with arrays and the like. Once I got past the buttonology, things started to click.
While she’s not perfect by any means, the end result is decent quality. Granted, the triangle count is high (19,644) for such a simple model. But at the end of the day, I am satisfied with the effort and end result. Thanks to all for the advice and encouragement.

Looks very nice!

Now take her to a 3d printer and get us some toys! :)

If anyone wants the 3d max model you can get her here. If it doesn't load straight away, hit F5. Filefront leave a lot to be desired these days.
