See topic. Its just I never understood how it worked. Anyone fill me in, please?

In The Original Series, it doesn't "work."
It was just used to remind us it was in the future.
In The Next Generation, the first digit has an impartial "4"
The next digit is the season
The remaining 3 digits just follow an order of progression.
You can use stardates to corespond to real dates
I'm sure someone can make up something to explain it.

I have always wondered how this worked.

so you're saying it makes even less sense on DS9 and Voyager?

For all your desired answers, I reccommend this site:
The Stardate FAQ
Lots of good info and theory into the Star Trek stardate concept.
Enjoy,

Well, that website didnt answer my questions on how the SFB years and the SFC years correlate.

The site was not meant to have anything to do with non-canon things like SFB and SFC, just pure theory on the stardate system for Star Trek itself, while still trying to remain respectful to canon as possible.
Since stardates were the issue, I felt the site appropriate to said topic.

ive made a few attempts at correlating a differemt set of stardates with Real Time dates.
first digit: Century
Next two digits: year
next 3 digits, day and time.
for example, Today is Thursday, 20 March 2003, 18:30 GMT.
That would make the date 10321.8 (210321.8, if you prefer)
the 20th of March is the 79th day of the year, multilply by 24, add the hour of the day, and then divide by 8766 (365.25*24)
Of course this is not the stardates being used in the 3 Trek Series (TNG, DS9, VOY) the case of the second number being the season number since the restart 16 years ago. They never followed any other format besides that, they made up the numbers as they felt neccessary and of course, there have been times where the next epsiode, according to the StarDate has actually taken place before the prvious episode.

It's been awhile but IIRC you add 2100 to the SFB dates to get SFC dates. I could be off a bit but it's close.
