Title: Bringing back the Tutorial Thread (Please Sticky)
Post by: FoaS_XC on November 12, 2004, 10:24:46 pm
Okay, rules for this thread.

1) POST THE TUTORIAL ALL IN ONE POST - no bits and pieces between posts.
2) dont just refer us to another site.
3) make sure it relates to Texturing or modelling for the games - while neat photoshop tutorials on how to make people is cool, its not really relevant.
4) dont post unless its a tutorial.
Title: Planet Rings
Post by: FoaS_XC on November 12, 2004, 10:49:13 pm
Planet Rings[/U]
For Photoshop 7 and CS

Why?: well this tutorial will be useful when making new planet rings for SFC.

1) NEW IMAGE
whatever size, it doesnt really matter...for this tutorial i am using 512x512.

2) GUIDES

on the top menu: VIEW>NEW GUIDE>
Make a 50% for both horizontal and veritcle
they should intersect at the exact middle of your image.
Like so.

3) COLOR GRADIENT

use the Gradient tool
(http://img16.exs.cx/img16/5143/Ring-Tool1.jpg)
and open the Gradient editor up at the top by clicking on the thumbnail of the gradient.

You should get something like this
(http://img16.exs.cx/img16/3540/Ring-Diag1.jpg)

Change this setting to Noise
(http://img14.exs.cx/img14/4442/Ring-Diag2.jpg)

And this to 50%
(http://img14.exs.cx/img14/2890/Ring-Diag3.jpg)

Now play around with these until you get the color you want.
I went with a nice teal-blue

Apply as a Radial Gradient from the exact middle to the edge.

4) VARIATION GRADIENT

In order to make it look like there are varying densities in the rings dust we are going to make rings of black.

Create a new layer

Go back to your gradient editor.
again, make it a noise at 50% roughness. but here is what is different

Change the Color Type to HSB
(http://img47.exs.cx/img47/1286/Ring-Diag5.jpg)

Slide the White slider on the "S" bar all the way to the left.

Press Randomize a few times until you get a nice high-contrast Gradient.

Apply the gradient the same way you did the last one.

On the top menu go to IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS>AUTO LEVELS
(http://img47.exs.cx/img47/9020/Ring-Work4.jpg)

Now change that top layer to Multiply
(http://img107.exs.cx/img107/9840/Ring-Diag7.jpg)

and you are done.

Add some noise to the first layer, maybe..then just throw it on a 0 height tube in 3ds Max around a planet.

I founnd alote of Tutorials when looking for how to make some textures. so i coppied them and here they are.

Tutorial By Fury_of_a_Seraph

Making a Saucer Texture...

Okay, this was made with Photoshop v7

First, Create an Image: 1024x1024
Second create two more layers on top of the background
Change Layer 2's Blending Mode to Multiply.

Next open this image as a seperate image.

Make a copy so you now have two versions of this B5 Hull image.
On ONLY ONE of them, go to IMAGE>IMAGE SIZE.
and change it to the following settings

Now on this image, go to EDIT>DEFINE PATTERN
Name is something like "Hull-50%"

Do the same thing on the unmodified B5 hull image and name it "Hull-100%"

This is for future use, this way you can do different things with scaling, i recommend as going so far as making a Hull 25% version too

You can close out both b5 Hull images, you dont need them any longer.

Go back to your 1024x1024...

Select the flood fill tool.
At the top there is an option called "Fill" with a dropdown menu.
Select PATTERN
Just to the right of that there is a "Pattern" drop down, select the Hull-100%...it should be second to last.

Fill Layer 2 with said pattern.

Now go to the FILTER>DISTORT>POLAR COORDINATES....
Select "Rectangular to Polar" and press okay...

VIOLA....now you can stop there and call it a good texture basis, or you can do just a little more...

On that second layer...the one that should be MULTIPLY mode...right? good....

On that layer, fill it as white (make sure to change your flood fill tool back to FOREGROUND instead of PATTERN)
 - it will look like nothing happened, dont worry it did.

go to FILTER>NOISE>and add these settings.

Now go to FILTER>BLUR>MOTION BLUR and add these settings

Do the same thing with FILTER>DISTORT>POLAR COORDINATES that you did with the Hull...and viola you have some wear and tear on your hull...

Of course you can play around with the settings....change Layer 1's opacity to 75%

add another layer on Overlay mode and fill it with color....have some fun with it

Of course if you want to make it 512x512 use the HULL 50% Fill instead.

I Hope this helps some of you
more tutorials to come

IMPORTANT!!!!!
PLEASE DO NOT POST IN THIS THREAD IN RESPONSE!!!!!!!
POST ONLY IF YOU HAVE TUTORIALS TO SHARE!!!!!
Reason why is this way people dont have to hunt through this thread as much in order to find tutorials
please help those in need...dont post in this thread.

A warp field tutorial:

1>open a new document, any size..(I usually make mine 1024x768)
2>EDIT>FILL>BLACK
3>FILTERS>NOISE>ADD NOISE..usually you want to just accept the default setting because the sttings usually give you a   decent enough starfield.
4>IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS>THRESHOLD...this allows you to adjust the number of stars even further...a neat effect
5>FILTERS>BLUR>RADIAL BLUR...adjust to suit your particular tastes and you can also put the blur on differant parts of the picture like for an off-center warp field...

There ya go...you should have a decent warp field!

I just recently made a tutorial for adding textures to a ship.  If you have some experience using 3ds max, but don't know how to add textures to a ship, this should be helpful.

For textures, use photoshop to change the image mode to indexed color and save as 8 bit. Saves on download size and disk space by 60% or more. Avoids those "above8bittexture" files. Does not result in loss of color information for 99.9% of cases.

A very good video tut on doing plane modelling.  Videos are in hd so you might be better off dling rather than streaming.
