Title: So what matters more for gameing
Post by: Khalee1 on February 01, 2005, 04:14:00 pm
the CD drive or Video card. Got plenty of memory still, can go up to 3 gigs on memory. So I am thinking of upgradeing one or the other, both if I can afford it.

Video card, easily.  Most games just use the CD drive as a key-check when you load it up, and don't actually run anything from the CD.

Or RAM. But definitly not the CD-drive.

What card/RAM config do you have right now? That'd help.

So, you think it's time to stess the new power supply?

Seriously..add up your power requirements, then what the difference in the new card will be..and that includes your cooling fans..I pack a lot of heat in my system, and have 5 fans to keep it cool (2 in front, two in back, and a pci slot fan with the intake pointed at the video card)..it works, but I try to stay at least 100 watts over my requirements..burners take more oomph when they burn, and HD's get hot...

Mike  glad you're up and running

And where would I find that info on the amount power I would need. As I sadi All I want to do is get a new vid card and cd, and maybe upgrade the memory too.

Well, find the maker of the motherboard and CPU..it's usually published..the HD & CD usually have it on the label (might be volt/amps..same thing..if not, ask Stephen to convert the units)..hopefully the video card has the specs, and my sparkly led fans pull 1.6 watts each..the rest should be easy...

BTW..have an unopened 52X32X52 CDRW (CompUSA) for $30 plus shipping...the same I installed in the wife's computer..bought it for my son when I rebuilt his, but he had to working CDRW's, so why waste it...Let me know

In the end, 2 HD, 1 CDRW, memory, vid card and MB and acilliaries, shouldn't draw enough for that PS..I had 4 HD, DVD burner, CDRW, Radeon 9200 and 2 gig of memory running off it...I just upgraded 'cause I went to 8 HD and 2 DVDRW..no kids in the house, I don't even have to watch the change in my pocket
