Post by: Mentat Jon on February 22, 2005, 12:10:00 pm
does this sound like a virus to you?

I cant use my task bar, start menu, without causing a blue screen of death, or getting a USER.EXE  fault, or a explorer freeze?

yep, the taskbar properties are scewed up.

are you able to get to your control panel, if so, can you do a disc scan?

If so, try to do a deep scan...

Do as toasty says.  Add a defrag.

I would add do both the scan and defrag in safe mode.  I found that booting in safe mode often repairs damage in Win98SE.

You might also while in safe mode check your drivers with the system option on the control panel, I have a times found duplicate device drivers there.  Delete all duplicated drivers and reinstall them (make sure you have copies before deleting of course).

Also there  is a program called System File Checker (SFC.exe)  in Win 98 that can do some locating and repairing of damaged system files but you will need the install CD.

One other thing as a last ditch item.  Export the registry then import it back in.  It seems that during the export it cleans up some errors.

Restart your computer and hit f8 it should take you to the options  screen asking which one you want , but if you get into safe mode you wont be able to use your CD drive. I still have a win 98 boot disk still have the cd too I belive, if you want I could mail them to you. Have to wait untill next week when I get payed again tho.

You'll like Win Xp way more than any previous version of Windows.. no chashing or blue screens, easy system restores, more stable, better application memory management, etc..

when you get Win XP, make sure to install the Network install of Service Pack 2, it is a 266 MB DL, the Windows update Service Pack 2 is only a partial package and causes 1 in 5 PC's to screw up.

the Service Pack 2 DL location you should use is :

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

This should be the first update you should get for XP.. then go to Windows Updates web site and use Custom Install.. get any and all available updates.. you may have to go back 2 or 3 times to get all the updates since some updates require a restart... and some updates may not show up until other components are installed.

From time to time MS makes all their updates available on DVD. When I get time I'll root around MSDN to see if I can find the link.
