Well, every time I run OP GFZ, I seem to be getting the blue screen of death. My system is getting funky for some reason. I can now only run certain Media Players from Windows, and don't know what is going on. I run Zone Alarm and AVG for protection, and keep them updated. Everything else seems to be fine. My VT works great, and I did a disk scan and then the system said there was no need to defrag. So...I am now open to suggestions on how to fix this. Should I do a complete uninstall and re-insall of OP, or what?
-
Does DX check out? I mean have you ran dxdiag and seen any problems? Drivers all up to date? ( I imagine they are) . Have you added any extra codecs to your system for your video?

Whoosh. That is all of it.
-
OK, we need to get you hooked up with DX9.0c It looks like maybe you installed a game, and hit the OK to add DX 8.0 Give me a second to find the link.
Stephen
-
Try this Ben.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0a9b6820-bfbb-4799-9908-d418cdeac197&displaylang=en
Let me know if that works for you, If not, We need to get Pesty over here.
Stephen
-
Thanks, Stephen. I am going to restart the system now and then test it. I'll let you know how it works.
-
Anytime man, I just hope this works for ya.
Stephen
-
Well, looks like I am still trouble shooting. I am going to find out if my drivers are updated I think.
-
OK Ben, If nothing else, PM Pesty and ask him to look at this thread.
Stephen
-
Roger that.
-
Well, I am PM'ed Pesty. Still having issues. So, between him and WW, I should figure something out.
-
Does it happen only with GFZ installed?
If you uninstall GFZ does it still happen?
-
I haven't uninstalled GFZ. But it happens now without the game on, too. I found something called Error Nuker. I was going to try it, or should I uninstall OP first and then try to do it again?
-

Whoah, if it happens without the game on it is likely unrelated.
Have you run an up-to-date full virus scan?
...and Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D and MS antispyware yet?
Are you running a software firewall?
-
Zone Alarm and AVG are running. The only time I take thefirewall down is when I am running the game.
-
I swore off zone-alarm some time ago... is it updated to its latest version?
Have you updated AVG and run a FULL scan?
Have you run any Anti-spyware software?
I trust you're not running Kazaa or anything silly like that?
-
I keep my virus scan and Zone Alarm updated. Kazaa? Never used it. Anti-spyware I think is running constantly as well.
-
BTW: I just tried to run a mission again. Got the BSOD once again. Evidently, when I don't run it, I don't get it nearly as much. But I doubt it is the game.
-
Thats weird, I assume you've tried a simple reboot?
Anything strange and foreign looking in the process list? (ctrl-alt-del ... task manager button ... processes tab ... check show processes from all users)
Use Google (liutilities.com seems to be the first hit always and seems reliable in identifying stuff) to search for processes you do not recognise...
What exactly does the BSOD say? (rather rare in XP - have yet to see it on my install)
Did you install any new software or driver updates recently?
If all else fails perhaps try using system restore to restore to a point previous to the error? (Though I do not reccomend using system restore and have it disabled myself.)
-
Anything weird looking? Bonk, you forget who you are talking to. All this crap looks wierd to me!! Haven't done a system restore. Did a complete virus scan, nothing. Shows that everything is well, and I have the latest updates.
-
The BSOD doesn't stay on long enough to read it. It lasts seconds, then the system reboots. Haven't installed anything new either.
-
That sounds like a bad device driver or perhaps even a hardware failure... you'll need to find out what the error says... even a hint would help.
-
I just wanted to add, Thank you Bonk for stepping up where my Knowledge ended. I think your helping to get him on the right path.
Stephen
-
The contents of the BSoD would go a long way in sorting this out. I did see in that very long list that was posted that DirectX 9.0c was installed. Have you looked in Device Manager yet and see if you see any red "!" or yellow "?" in there? The only other thing I could suggest is to put the WinXP disk in the drive and try the repair option. But then if you have a company OEM disk that probably will not work.
In the mean time keep an eye on exactly what is running when you are experiencing these problems. If you can figure out what is running when the problems starts try write down everything that is running at the time of the crash. Then when the system restarts, run the same programs again but leave one program unstarted. (My family is here now and it is hard for me to think, too many emotions are running though my head right now) Keep repeating the process of elimination until the program no longer exists. That should help track things down if the there is a compatibility issue between programs. When the BSoD comes up write down what you can until the system restarts, even if it is only one letter at a time. I've had to do the same thing before, it's not fun but usually it's the fastest way to track down a problem.
-
After the blue screen your computer automatically restarts? And is that why you cant see the BSOD? IF so go to Control Panel>System>Advanced and then click the settings button under Start Up and Recovery. Untick the box by automatically restart under system failure. This will freeze the blue screen and then you'll have to manually turn your computer off to reboot.
-
My note above is for XP only though.
If you havn't really installed anything else on your computer and the problem just manifested itself suddenly I woold check your RAM with Memtest and see if your memory is experiencing errors.
Instructions can be found here: http://www.houseofhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36140. That forun is a good one for memory issues.
-
OK.. let's see what we can do here..
First and foremost, if it is only OP doing it, then I would state it is the game.. but your PM states you are limited in Media players as well so here goes.
Try doing a system Restore to about 2 or 3 days ago.. so long as it is before the problem occurred.. that is the easiest fix.. if unable to do so then here is the long road.
First get Ad-Aware SE personal edition from www.lavasoft.de and do system scan for spyware.. remove everything that Ad-Aware finds..
Next go to http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html and get Spybot Search and Destroy
install and run a scan (turn off Tea Timer in the original config)
remove everything it finds.
Next download and run Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta 1, update definitions, then scan your system.. remove all it finds...
Next Dl and reinstall the Windows XPSP 2 IT install 266 MB
You can get it here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en
Next update your Video Drivers and Motheroard drivers from the respective chipset creator.. AKA AMD for the motherboard chipset drivers current release and NVidia for the current Riva Drivers...
Next run a full AVG Virus scan...
now if your system still acts up like this I would think maybe your Video Card is burning out or maybe a Ram chip.... also could be incorrectly configrued IRQ channels (channels for your Hardware to operate correctly).
I would first try taking your memory in to Comp USA and getting it tested to se if it is burnt, if it is good, let them test your Vid Card, it those are good, then you have a Windows System file problem, which should have been fixed by the XPSP 2 reinstall.. soo, that leaves conflicting IRQ, which would mean a complete reinstall as you can not change IRQ in XP enviroment..., but it is not a guarantee that it will work...
You may have something else on your system conflicting with drivers or even a new peice of software conflicting with the OS... Bluescreen can be caused by something as simple as X program neexs memory that Y program is running in and since X program has priority, it tries to dump Y program.. result system lock and blue screen...
so any new software that you installed, that may have required a system restart could cause a conflict resulting in the error...
anyhow, let me know how this works.
-
Don't run to CompUSA unless you plan on buying some new memory. Nothing against them but they are most probably going to boot your memory up in a machine and run Memtest or one of its variants. If you let Memtest loop a few times or just start it before you go to bed and let it go till morning it will loop through all it tests and report if it experiences any errors. If it reports errors your Ram is either going bad or is bad.
-
When I was talking to AS he mentioned an nvid error, I'm thinking perhaps a vid card issue. The whole system itself is brand new save the proc and just about everything in it I can test. I doubt the mem is an issue unless it's a recent thing, the system has only been in use just over a month. But I can pull it and do my own tests on it. If anything I'll probally take one of my old, but trusted, video cards and swap it out, as right now that's my best guess.
By the way he will not be installing XP SP2, otherwise all drivers and windows updates should be up to date as of 2 months ago. Course when I was talking to him yesterday afternoon he ran for hours with no issue. So who knows. :(

:goodpost: I didn't know that, cool. Never had a BSOD issue on my XP install but if I ever do that will sure come in handy...
-
I just want to thank everyone for their input and advice. Haven't had an issue for nearly a day now, so maybe it is going to be okay. If I get another BSOD, I will write down what it says.

Umm.. if he plans on using any new software in the future on the system And / OR getting updates after July of this year, He is going to have to have XPSP 2 service package.. the reason I stated the IT 266 MB install is because it is the complete package.. the one at Windows Update is only 80 MB and causes 1 in 5 systems to mess up...
-
Well I think we have killed the BSOD. I checked the event viewer and everytime he could recall an BSOD there was a critical stop in the true vector monitor, which is zonealarm for those that do not know.
Proceeded to uninstall and reinstall with a later version and now we have to see if ti works. apparently the last time ZA tried to update itself the patcher got a lil wonky according to Angelslayer so I guessing it got corrupted. That was the only error I saw and the timeframe matched to the minute as far as we could tell.
-
Software firewalls; BAD!
On-Demand Virus Scanners; BAD!
Remember this.
-
Heh, still better then being infested with viruses and doing a complete restore like he's been doing for the past year. 1st time for me ZA has done anything like that.
He does have a router with built in firewall, and i'm guessing that he has the new system we should probally go ahead and set it back up.
-
Well, that will make my boys happy. They are screaming bloody murder for me to get the PS2 back online for them. We'll get together and do that soon after work as well. I really appreciate the help, Will. CareBear and the two Lords have already said that the BSOD is now gone. No one has seen it since. ;D

I just wanted to take a moment to thank Bonk, Stephen, Pestalence, Javora and Elvis, as well as Will for all the ideas and input on this issue. I just ran about four missions on GFZ, which is where it typically crashes, but no problems at all now. You guys have been a great help and speak volumes about the typical members on this community. Thanks to all.
-
Bonk, I think I know what you mean, about the on demand AVs and software firewalls. I currently use Norton AV and Personal Firewall; I hate their invasiveness but like Will Weasel said, it's better than getting blasted three times every two days. I am using a firewall router, too though, so maybe the soft-wall may not be too necessary.
What would you recommend, however?
-
What did you do to fix it Angel Slayer? It might be useful for future reference, (in case I have a similar problem). :)
Edit: OK my bad, it was ZoneAlarm, serves me right for skim reading and not going to bed earlier. :P Glad you fixed it, these things can be a bummer to sort out.

It looks like you and I are at the same place with Norton. I'm getting ready to install WinXP this week so my spouse can play with Photoshop/Premiere, so I need to figure this issue out soon. The problem I have is that sometimes I take my system over to a friends house to play games. This sort of forces me to purchase a software firewall and a antivirus as I don't always know the people that are there on any given day or the setup they have. I have a hardware firewall built into my router (Netgear FVS318), it is not perfect but it seems to do pretty well.
The thing is the more I research this issue the more confused I become. Kaspersky and McAfee seem to be tops as far as catch rate goes according to the graphs in the link (http://www.schadentech.com/Reviews/Antivirus/conclusion.htm) I posted another thread. But Kaspersky I told can be a pain to configure and you can only buy it on the web. McAfee is a resource hog and was totally unstable on my Win2000 setup plus there help desk was reading from a script. Now when I read the reviews from CPU and Maximum PC, I found PC-Chillin kept popping up as the best for 2005. Virus Bulletin (http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml) has also given PC-Chillin good marks lately as well. However the trial version of PC-Chillin I received with my motherboard (18 months ago) was totally unstable. Virus Bulletin also gave PC-Chillin a failure rating around the same time period for WinXP. So I have to wonder if PC-Chillin is on solid ground now or are they just hitting a momentary peak.
If you haven't guessed yet I am researching all of this as I am writing this post. *sigh* :D
Well I'm wiping the hard drive today so I'll let you know what I come up with tonight. I'm putting WinXP on another hard drive so my current Win2000 setup will be unaffected.
-
Well, Javora, I am by no means an expert, but I have used the Norton system. Not now. It is a pain to have, and it missed more than it caught. I use the free copies of AVG and Zone Alarm, and, aside from this one issue, I've had much better success with them than I ever did with Norton. Plus, these two don't eat up near the memory that Norton does.
-
AngelSlayer, who makes AVG?
Also, to anyone, how... what is the best way to uninstall Norton's AV? I'd still like to keep the Utilities part of Norton; unfortunately I got it all with a Norton Systemworks package. I hope I can uninstall the AV and install a less resource greedy one.
Ah, the old days of DOS when even I knew what to do...
-
Grisoft Freeweb: Get AVG for your home PC virus protection
That is how I got it. Will loaded it all and everything, but it is easy to use and set up. I do know I'll not put Norton back on my computer again.
-
Hi Ed, Grisoft (http://www.grisoft.com) makes AVG.
-
Just type in AVG in Google. It pulls it right up. Give me a moment, I'll get a link...
http://www.sofotex.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition-download_L21.html
-
Thanks Javora. I kinda sorta got stupid and didn't just post what he wanted. Had me one of them grandpa moments...
-
What would you recommend, however?
Careful browsing.
I do a virus scan once a month and once in a while it will turn up a bad javascript or applet in the cache if I've been a bad boy... thats it.
I use a router and no software firewall... system is as solid as a rock.
-
Okay, folks,
now then, how to successfully (completely) uninstall Norton AV?
-
Never used Norton so I can't help you E-look. :( You might need a blow torch to get it off your drive though, lol.
I used to use ZoneAlarm in conjunction with a router but I seemed to have a lot of problems with it. I think ZoneAlarm was blocking my router sometimes but I never worked out what it was. ZoneAlarm now hasn't worked at all since I installed SP2.
Now, I'm aware that a router is a pretty good thing to have if you want to remain safe on the web, however, while it is good for blocking incoming nasties I don't think it has the ability to outgoing nasties, for example if you contract a zombie virus that might use your computer to perform DDOS attacks. But then I guess you have to be careful what you download and virus scan often. (I use AVG too, pretty good for free if you ask me ).
-
Okay, folks,
now then, how to successfully (completely) uninstall Norton AV?
Haven't tried with recent versions but in the past there was no way to remove Norton.
-
Oh, boy; THAT doesn't bode too well...
-
With Norton, you must remove using Add\remove programs.. everything related to Norton, including all the stuff that states Symantec..
Next go into Documents and Settings\<user name> and Documents and Settings\All Users and look for a folder called Symantec and delete it.
Next go to Program Files and remove the Symantec folder.
Next go into Program Files\Common Settings and remove the Symantec folder,
Next run Regedit and use the Menu, Tools Find option and search for Norton and Symantec through the entire registry and delete all folders / keys...
Then if you have a registry cleaner, run it,
then install your new firewall / AV.
I would however suggest Panda Platinum Internet Securities 2005.. it contains a software firewall that is easy to configure.. basically after you do a complete install, you can just launch SFC OP, and get to the Single Player/ Multiplayer screen.. hit the windows key and wait for the panda pop up next to the task bar clock.. click Enable or allow.. next go back into game and click the Multi-player tab and hit Dynaverse, then hit Accept, then windows key, then Panda will ask for permission again.. click Always allow..
Exit SFC OP, launch GSA and do the same thing with Panda.. This will allow GSA to work without incident and it will allow SFC OP to work without incident online or in LAN.. do this with each of your programs that need web access .. wha-la.. no ports to configure.. Panda will handle it on a program by program basis automatically.. Panda blocks file connections independantly.. as such, SFC OP in Panda will have access to all ports on your system, but no other program until you give it permission.. as such someone trying to access your system from the outside, Panda will notify you as it is not coming in on any of your running programs and panda will automatically keep them blocked until you tell panda to allow.. and even then Panda offers options of Deny this time only, Always Deny, Always Allow, Allow this time only and close (basicallly Deny this time only)... It also scans for spyware and unknown incoming threats that are not known viruses, active script blocking and invalid JS blocking and many other things... plus Panda updates 5 or 6 times a day for new virus signatures, usually pulling 2 or 3 during the check, then it gets the master file for all non urgent spyware\viruses at midnight each night which usually has about 200+ definitions...
Anyhow, it is the best software firewall and AV I have ever used.. it even notifies when someone tries to enter a backdoor on to your system.. Hyuristics enabled AV will also notify you of unknown files which it will quarentine automatically.. as such, you can go to the quarantine section and right click on the file (if your programs needs it) and select Restore, then Panda will ask how you want to restore.. Disinfect and restore or just plain restore... So far the only file Hyuristics finds on my system as unknown is the Windows Media Player 10 launch file, which should be updated by Panda in just a few days or maybe a couple weeks..
Hope that this helps.
-
Well I ended up buying PC-Chillin Internet Security 2005. Panda was the second choice, but for me I liked the idea of it's network protection and the fact that I have it on a CD. I just hope that: A. It performs as well as the Tech magazines and other reviews say it will. B. That it is not a resource hog like Norton is and that it will not fowl up the registry. And most importantly C. That PC-Chillin will play nice with Norton Ghost and other programs that I run... Yeah I'm keeping my fingers crossed here. :D
I'm going to load PC-Chillin on to WinXP Pro with SP2 full version (not an update version) that I just bought. When I'm done I may uninstall Norton (if I can) and install PC-Chillin on my Win2000 setup to give myself some type of comparison between the two. I'll let you all know what I come up with, as this has been a good way to keep my mind off of things here.
-
Wow, Pestalence, thanks!
Jav- I'm staying tuned to hear your experiences on this!
-
I just finished installing WinXP and a few other programs. I had to nuke my Win2000 install because I needed the hard drive space. PC-Chillin seems to play well with Norton Ghost and it doesn't seem to be chewing up the resources like Norton did. PC-Chillin does seem to be a little weak when it comes to ad blocking though. I need to do a little more digging into the program and see if I can change the settings. Every time there is an update PC-Chillin will pop up this big window in the middle of my screen to ask if I want to download the update or not. Again I think I just need to change some settings, but it is annoying after seeing three of them in a 5 hour time span. So far overall I'm pretty pleased with what is going on, but it is early and I need to see change some of these settings or not. I'll keep you posted Ed, and if anyone else has any questions or comments please feel free, I'll answer what I can.

For Ad Blocking.. if you use Internet Explorer from XPSP2 update, just turn on the built in POP Up blocker.. it will work in conjunction with your AV-Ad blocker to help almost totally eliminate ads.. also if you like I can help you configure IE to be much more secure and to help eliminate about 90% of spyware from entering your system.. and this is without AV or Firewall going...
Anyhow.. hope that this helps.
-
Well, WW and I hooked up my router last night (mostly WW. I watched.), so now I have the hardware firewall up. I am going to configure it on my next day off so I can play OP online. System is now running really good.
-
Time to update: WW is going to set my router up. I did a search, read all the directions that you guys have posted on it, and realized that, once again, you are speaking that strange, computer language that only people within the inner circle comprehend. I always tell Will he has a microchip in his butt. I am beginning to think there are more people out there that are the same way.
Now I realize why I avoided computers for so long. The language is way out of what I understand...
-
LOL!
Your comment reminds me of the scene in Space: Above and Beyond when the colonel(?), a clone, opens himself up somewhere on his neck around his ear and pulls out a microchip. I forgot if it was to control vertigo or give him enhanced piloting skills or whatever, but even though there was no gore, nothing obscene, the scene shocked me. You say WW has one in his butt, eh?
-
Well, I didn't mean that I've checked, or ever intend to. Just when people start talking like this, I realize I am really out of date.

Thanks Pestalence. I've been using Firefox but I'll give that a try it will help the spouse anyway. I sure hope the next version of IE will have tabbed browsing.
Another update about PC-Chillin. First: PC-Chillin has no ad blocking what so ever, which is a huge weak point as far as I'm concerned. This is the one thing that Norton did very well. I think that PC-Chillin will have to add that ad-blocking feature next year for me to be a repeat customer. Second: I was able to turn off the "Outbreak Warning System", I think I would have been totally upset if there was a big pop-up on my screen every time the Internet sneezed. Third: Here is the good part, PC-Chillin has an option built in to check a system for "known Microsoft security vulnerabilities". When I clicked the scan button PC-Chillin found a Microsoft Office 2000 update that I needed. PC-Chillin didn't catch all the updates that I needed but it did catch the "High Risk" update. Something I forgot to do when I installed Office. So I have to give PC-Chillin a big thumbs-up for that one.
I haven't had the chance to test PC-Chillin with gaming environment yet so I'm going to withhold final judgment until then. Personally this doesn't reflect well on the Tech magazine's staff (CPU magazine in particular) that gave PC-Chillin an almost perfect score. Not that I relied on them totally but it did influence my decision.
-
Hey, opinions, folks-
What say you if I opt to keep (renew subscription) to Norton AV, Systemworks, Firewall, etc.?
Is it better to get rid of it and try something else or continue on with it? I wonder if it is not what is responsible for raising the running temp of my Athlon 64 3000+ a few degrees...

Here is a screen shot of how Panda looks and what it does.. I'm not going to show the sub features.. but this is the Panda Internet Securities 2005...
As you can see it has many options that conventional AV does not have.. plus the firewall is software specific.. just launch the program.. if it is trying to access the net.. you can allow or deny.. you can even go in and set up custom ports for programs to use instead of giving the program automatic port usage...
Anyhow.. I have no problems connecting to the Dynaverse is any game I have for SFC as all I did was launch game, when at Single Player / Multiplayer screen.. windows key.. give SFC OP permission (it will pop up notify next to clock asking for permission of firewall), then go back into game, click Multi-Player, click Dynaverse, Click Accept on age verify, window key again, grant entry, exited game.. launched GSA, gave GSA permissions and granted entry.. relaunched OP, and wha-la.. connected to Dynaverse first try.

Norton is so system invasive, it drops system performance by at least 20% and it is almost classified as a virus in itself.. as such, IMHO, get rid of it and go with something else.
-
Hee hee hee...
... I wonder if it isn't to a large degree responsible for my SFC1 lag! ;D
-
Norton's Active scan for AV scans all files in use constantly.. it is good protection measure.. however it interferes with programs that are swap file intensive.. as such, it would effect SFC 1... also check for the new install instructions I listed for SFC 1.. Step 8 and 9 is changed.. also I posted that you should NOT use compatibility mode for SFC 1.. it is a part of the cause of lag.
-
Our recent D.net Apache crashes ultimately were due to Symantec/Norton AV interfering with Apache's use of Winsock 2's AcceptEx()... (and some bad thread settings) so in addition to slowing the server down overall, I am forced to use Apache's slower unix style Accept() to stabilise the webserver... Ain't Norton/Windows grand! ::)
<---- QNX (http://www.qnx.com) fan! ;D
http://www.frescos.dns2go.com:30033/uaw/ <---- My QNX 6.3.0 (Apache 2.0.50 php 5.0.0 MySQL 4.0.18) server!
(once up and configured that sucker only goes down with the power or connection or dns providor failure or if I stress it with a bad php script or sql query in development, lol... I really need to recompile the apache/php from the latest sources soon though... as dynamic modules this time as I think I've figured out the licencing of qcc/gcc in QNX-NC (non-commercial))

OK last update about PC-chillin, I finally had the time to play a little Neverwinter Nights on-line last night. As soon as the game tried to connect on-line PC-chillin popped up a warning screen asking if I wanted to allow this program access to the Internet. This pop-up appeared on top of the full screen game. As soon as I clicked that it was ok, PC-chillin stayed completely out of my way. I always had problems with Norton on this issue. Also PC-chillin update feature is extremely fast, not at all like Norton's live update. Once you get the settings worked out (and that takes some time) PC-chillin seems to work very well. From what little I've seen it seems to be gaming friendly. I really hate the fact that it doesn't have a ad-blocking feature. If it wasn't for the kids I wouldn't worry about but... *sigh*. If next year PC-chillin doesn't have ad-blocking added to it's line up then I may look into buying PC-chillin antivirus and Norton firewall.
Overall while I'm not as happy with PC-chillin as CPU magazine's staff seem to be (they gave it 4.5cpu's out of 5). It is a very good program once you learn how to use it as long as you don't need any form of ad-blocking.
