Anybody still out there?
;D

I love playing OP on GSA! Every night, there's about 8 people on at the peak of the day (7-11 PM usually). Same group of people most of the time, sometimes newer players too. It's great fun!

7 years later (10 after the last Battle)
Hey, anyone around? ::)
If no reply I ll check again in 5 years :crazy2:

A league of two players is better than nothing.

What edition / version?
SFC:CE v2.673 via Evolve would be my preference for the most stable Starfleet multiplayer in existence. But beggars can't be choosers. The OP+ 4.0 mod is popular, but it's an annoying shiplist to increment through with so many variants, most of which are never selected in competition. Gameranger has connectivity problems that I never encountered with Evolve.
-
SFC CE should be the best choice, to avoid any OS compatibility issues.
We could arrange to meet at an agreed time and play according to the available members, e.g 2v2, 2v3, 3v3 following SFB rules.
We need a realtime online platform to meet and schedule. Teamspeak3 or Skype group chat room would be good choices
-
I guess it's CE if I am to play as I am on windows 7. If CE is chosen, will I need to buy it or are there downloads. I can play Monday, Wed-Friday evenings after 8pm eastern. I have plain OP loaded right now.

There is a group lobby for SFC Community Edition that Strat started on EvolveHQ. It probably has a voice chat option like mplayer/gamespy. But with Evolve you never rely on it to launch anything! It tunnels data, as if all of us were on a LAN.
-
I made a profile on evolve awhile back, but never played.
I just sent a request to join the CE group on evolve.

I'll look for you on the group. I think the CE group is open to all...or all requests are approved automatically. What's your EvolveHQ handle?
-
TobinDax for evolveHQ handle.
-
I have created the skype chat room : 'SFC Community', https://join.skype.com/iilDOHzMyKPh
my skype contact is : greek_butcher
you may add me to your contacts and Ill invite you to the SFC chat room.
-
On a PC with no camera and no Skype. Can do team speak or ventrillo? I will have to get a new headset. Haven't needed one for awhile.
-
.
-
logged into evolve. How does chat work? Still learning the layout there.
I see it says I am offline even though I am logged in.

-
going to work soon. Hope to pick up a new headset in a few days.
-
Just wanted to keep this thread alive...
I'll be moving soon, and I hope to be able to play regularly in January and February. In the meantime, get on EvolveHQ for CE/OP (or Gameranger for OP) and battle the few humans you may find. Join the Starfleet Command CE group (https://www.evolvehq.com/groups/starfleet-command-2-ce) on EvolveHQ and add those members to your friends list.

Why isn't everyone using Firesoul's OPPLUS 4.1?
-
Why isn't everyone using Firesoul's OPPLUS 4.1?
It is tedious to select a particular ship in such an enormous database. It's okay for Dynaverse, I suppose, but too bulky for pick-up games. Even OP+ 4.0 is annoyingly full of ships that nobody ever chooses. A league needs an efficient and realistic shiplist for competition.
-
I recommend we use the regular CE shiplist, modified in five ways.
1. All ships get a full supply of admin shuttles. SFC1 didn't fully supply every ship because you could purchase special shuttles (WW, SP, SS) in spacedock. You couldn't create them during battle. EAW and OP inherited this less-than-full load scheme, even though these games have shuttle conversion abilities.
2. The Romulan War Eagle (R-WE) is redesignated as R-WE_. This fixes a very peculiar bug that crashes the game if a R-WE is chosen.
3. Applicable ships (K-D7, R-KR, H-D7H, etc.) use the special Klingon boom phaser arc (KFX) instead of FX. This matches Orion Pirates data. I am currently updating the sprites.q3 file to provide the proper arc graphic for KFX.
4. All scouts are removed. Nobody ever used the F-SC or similar ships these past 16 years. And nobody ever will unless "special sensors" are coded to do something functional.
5. Ships are grouped by appropriate hull-type (G-CL is placed with Light Cruisers instead of Heavy Cruisers, for example). Firesoul did this for OP+.

I should have some time next week to play if we can settle on time and version etc.

Hi everyone,
If someone can provide me with details on what/where i can get the "correct" shiplist/patches beyond after doing a fresh CE install then i would be glad to play some games, after what must be in the region of 15 years since I remember living on Mplayer/GSA as a child! :) (What was that other website, seemeplayme or similar?)

I have OP+ 4.1.1, is that no good? Or is it just OP 4.0 with the model changes and will be ok? Any ideas?
-
.
-
Fair enough, I am reinstalling now :)
-
OP+ 4.1.1 comes with a shiplist swapper to select 4.0, 4.1.1, or stock versions. There's no need to uninstall.
-
OP+ 4.1.1 crashes on me.............

You are of course correct! :)
My OP install on Windows7 64bit was done a while back, and having now done a fresh install I realised I was running 4.0+ all along, as my previous installation was bodged using the "OP_Enhancement_Package_v3.0" as well as 4.1.1+ installer, and it turns out the 4.1.1+ ended up in the wrong directory!
One a side note, I have come to the conclusion SFC2:CE doesn't work for AI battles, the AI just doesn't fly correctly, fighters act strange etc.. Can I use the EAW shiplist in OP, or are the formats incompatible? Or is there a hacked OP shiplist that I can use for the single player campaign which cuts out all the OP advanced era ships?
Many Thanks! :)
-
So how are we going to meet up?
I have CE and OP 2552 4.0 loaded and evolve group membership.

The AI in CE often attempts to capture rather than destroy. (I've actually been beaten by the AI because of it!) The AI also tries to harrass you with phasers at high speed, never firing heavy weapons. The OP/EAW AI usually tries to ram you, but it typically fires its weapons too early, and then you get to drill it with a range zero strike. Dumb as a brick, but agressive! The AI in CE is indeed strange -- it's almost unwilling to fight at times. Ships with multiple kinds of heavy weapons do poorly, but ships like the K-D6D or F-CA seem to be more effective because they only have one type of heavy weapon.
An EAW (or CE) shiplist will work in OP, but the Orion cartels won't have any ships. It's easy to delete the X-ships from an OP shiplist with any text editor (notepad). None of the OP campaign missions require X-ships.

So how are we going to meet up?
I have CE and OP 2552 4.0 loaded and evolve group membership.
We can post in this thread. I usually read Dynaverse.net before I try to find some multiplayer action. Each of us could post our preferred time to play, like "Friday and Saturday, after 8pm EST", for example. Logging into EvolveHQ and entering the CE group lobby will work fine once we get playing somewhat regularly.
-
I am logged into evolve now. May be afk for a few minutes here or there. Will hang around probably for an hour or 2.
-
The accomplished veteran, StarTrekMike-iCoP, is looking for some multiplayer action. I tell you, multiplayer is on the brink of extinction...Every month or two an old player drops by, and he gives up because nobody seems to be playing. Get on EvolveHQ, make friends with TarMinyatur, d4v1ks, XconGeneral, Mike-iCoP, KBF-Butcher, TobinDax.
-
A couple of months ago, I joined the CE and OP groups on Evolve, and there was nobody there on any day that I checked. It would be a good idea to arrange some firm times to get things started rather than wait for someone to pop up.

Right on! I have sat around evolve hoping to catch someone but it doesn't happen, so we need to have a way to coordinate games.
-
Monday and Friday nights eastern time. Some Wednesday nights. PM me hear in the afternoon/early evening. I check emails pretty frequently so I 'll see the dynaverse message.
-
There's an issue with Evolve. A player may appear to be offline even though they are online. So yeah, the best thing to do is to make a firm time for a match that everyone can see. Like here on Dynaverse.net. Maybe a new topic on Main Page. "Multiplayer Matchups: Days and Times" or something better.
-
Logged into evolve right now ...
-
I'm moving, so I'll only have internet access from public libraries, which aren't thrilled with gaming. Maybe next week I'll get cable internet at my new place...
I'll give a shout when my connection is up and running.
-
See you then. signed off. The party system is overloaded and can't connect anyway.

Yes. There is a wall at first. Ship selection is very important. Certain Heavy Cruisers can't defeat War Cruisers even though the BPV is similar. Once you and an opponent reach an equal level of experience, ship selection is often the determining factor in victory. Something like a Z-BCH with slow missiles is going to struggle against an I-CCY. You won't likely have an opportunity to tractor it on a medium map. Your speed-16 missiles are outrun all day long. I'm sure that the Z-BCH can win, but it will be an uphill battle.
That's the addictive part of SFC. How do I beat ship X with ship Y? Even if I make no mistakes, can I beat that ship if my opponent makes no mistakes?
-
How will you get better if you are afraid to play because you might lose? My 1st game against Mike I got pasted in short order. I didn't quit. I'm getting to play against an accomplished veteran. It's making me think about race and ship selection, firing arcs and ranges etc. It's a deep game. Lots to think about. Lots to learn.

I'm just messing with you guys. ;D
I'm getting surprised by how good some of you play.
It is like... #$%#$&
I've to improve in some way!
Good link Tobin.
I'm enjoying to read it.
Ynrohkeeg's tactics refer to SFC1, which allowed trickle-charging (e.g. arming a Plas-R over 4, 5, 6+ turns) and fast-loading (e.g. firing a Disruptor in 1/2 turn). Were these features good for the game? I don't know. There was something just plain wrong about, let's say, a Hydran Lord Marshal flying speed 31 with (effectively) 4 OL Fusions and 2 HB. But I had a lot of fun in SFC1.
Experienced opponents adjust their ECM/ECCM levels a hundred times in a battle. Tobin never gave up last night, lol. He was always looking to attain a defensive shift or negate mine. If one player ignores the Electronic Warfare element, he'll probably lose. 1 point of net ECM is usually a great bargain. Short-term Erratics can be efficient against a peeler -- a captain looking to fire a Forward Arc weapon at range 8.9 (or 12.9 or 15.9) and turn away from a slower ship's Plasma/Missiles/Short-range stuff.
-
I can't even beat the AI anymore.
-
I can't even beat the AI anymore.
I'm finding that hard to believe....
-
Good times to do battle for me are Tues, Thurs, Sat, & Sun nights EST (and depending on the weather, Sat and Sunday afternoons too).
-
I can't even beat the AI anymore.
Omg. We old geezers. When was the last time you played?
Against another human? 2009

I just played a single person skirmish (default ships) on my laptop. I'm rusty but my reflexes had me reaching for keys that my laptop doesn't have and I'm not even sure what the key would have been on a full size keyboard but my reflexes know.
This is on Netrunner Linux 16 and the only tweaking I did was to set the Windows emulation to 2000. EAW no patches applied.
