in really exciting news today from the nasa chandra team, the youngest black hole ever found at a mere 30 years old has shaken up the science community. it is a remnant of a supernova SN 1979C in the nearby galaxy m100. the first link has a neat video showing the formation process and the second link has a cool pic of the nearby galaxy with the supernova pictured. not only was this the youngest black hole found but one of the smallest stars to explode and form a black hole. it was only 20 times the mass of our own sun and on the border between big enough to form a black hole and small enough to compact and form a neutron star. fascinating stuff.
