Title: Baseline - an EAW testing and fun server
Post by: Bonk on November 20, 2010, 09:42:08 am
Pretty much like the topic says. Stock. Baseline. Blow stuff up. Test Vista and 7. Report, discuss, argue, smack talk... etc..

But seriously, this is data collection for EAW 2036 server running on SQL and the behaviour of the current EAW 2036 client on Vista/7/8.

I may start back-porting the oci. I'll post and observations discoveries or progress here. Please do so also if you find anything interesting.

I have yet to get my EAW client re-installed properly on Vista and XP and so have not logged in yet.

Edit: got my EAW client installed and patched on vista (to C:\SFC\...)  running the setup.exe from the CD in XP compat as admin and then the same for the patch. (and don't forget the directory server change)

Logged in and it appears that EAW on vista suffers the exact same problems as OP. Kinda good news.

Will have to reinstall eaw. Will be good to see how that game runs again, and compare differences between it and op. I don't remember anymore.

It was a bit of a trip down memory lane for me.  :)

I remember the camera system in top down view is better than OP. I will never be as great a captain in OP as I was in EAW because the camera systems horrible change in OP. I hate the OP camera changes... hate em.

Maqke a note. Don't change camera system. ;)

Sure... there might be some clues in there about Vista/7 client issues and it can't hurt to have a good sized sample database to play with. Send it along to my email. (and logs if you keep them)

I think I'll start converting the OCI to EAW today... I wonder how messy that will get? Should be a good exercise and review on the differences.

edit: the conversion of the OCI back to EAW is going pretty smooth, too easy. I guess it makes sense. I started the whole thing on EAW 2036 and then moved it to OP... It is built pretty well, though oddly. I think I'll just be able to use the same script and set a gametype config value and add a few conditionals here and there...

dOES the ED DBeditor we use in OP work on EAW?

Um, not sure... but I have EAW flatfile parsers of old floating around somewhere if I dig. I know I have a cleaner somewhere but not sure about edits. I doubt it would be hard to modify EDDBEDIT to handle the EAW flatfile too if it does not already. But this is running on SQL and EAW2036 was quite stable on it. (if we had a gang to load test it... to reprove it now...)

There's an EAW editor... not sure if it is as fresh as the new OP editor that is floating around but I imagine it will work.

Making good progress on making the OCI able understand the EAW db as well. I'd forgotten (never knew?) about pirate control of hexes on the empire map in EAW (fed blue on the oci map atm). The server setup is pretty much stock (default AI). It is interesting to watch the AI on the map / in the news... the pirates and some races have taken a few hexes...

"The Lyran Star Empire has lost control of sector (2,6) due to the successful attack by the Orion Pirate Cartels."

Yeah, we need to turn that sh*t down. Dunna want AI affecting hexes at all if we can help it.

'Course, but this is a "stock" - "Baseline" test. Once we have a vista client working, then on to the usual server setups. ;)

XP pro only here. I ran a few missions. AI plays a more agressive ECM/ECCM game than in OP.

load CDs 1&2 of EAW

click on FTP directory at top right of screen

click on sfc2 eaw

click on patches for the 2002-2036 patch

go back to directory and click on sfc op and patches to find server directory update

I was thinking of this as i was trying to get mine working and thought of the ESG sound loop EAW doesn't have one like OP does.

Install Starfleet Command: Empires at War on a pre-Vista windows system. Patch it to 2036. Run the directory server update. If you have a router know it very well and understand what a static lan configuration is and how to forward port ranges. Allow pings from the WAN.

Edit the EAW shortcut to skip the video (point it at Starfleet2.exe). Run it. Wait for the menu, slelect multiplayer then select Dynaverse. Wait a m inute for the login button to light up. Enter your gamespy login information. If you do not have a gamespy account, go get a free one. (They will try and suck you into paying, they hide their free service). You will get a serverlist... give ti another minute to update... select the server you want to play on, and click login. You will be prompted to select a race and character name first time you login to a server. If you ant another character, use another email.

I think that basically covers it.

I'll have to dig out my EAW disks.  My biggest dislike over OP is that there is no Hellbore/ESG interaction.   Have to remember that when I play  ;)

Alright, I've port forwarded every number I could find on this site related to the game and the Wan Ping and I still can't get any server list.  Now when I run the server directory it doesn't seem to find anything. Is it supposed to?  That is part of the message on the Dynaverse log in. "server directory not found", and then the wonder "you are behind a firewall or not online or the server firewall may be down."

I am running Vista, I thought this server was to help try to test that, but maybe that's why it doesn't work.

Any other thoughts? I hope I'm not soundling like a pain!

google "directplay ports". Hit #1 - MS KB Article. SFCII uses directplay 7 interfaces.

Yes vista is iffy... sometimes takes three tries to get a serverlist.

Please do not test on vista unless you can already connect fine from an XP install at the same location. (Sorry, should have mentioned that - it would be just silly to try and diagnose both simultaneously with new users... the vista firewall is extremely complicated and cannot be disabled - even though they tell you it can.)

If you use Norton or McAfee on any platform you can pretty much forget gaming.

ASIDE: EAW has held up pretty damn well for its age. I just tried to install Battlefield 2 on vista. After 2 and half hours I gave up. The game was published in 2005 fer crying out loud... and it is completely dead already. The installer fails over and over and over... installsheild is evil.

Server is down again for a day or two. Going to move it to facilitate better testing. Should be back in a few days at the most.

That will give me a few days to dig in my basement to see if I can find my copy of EAW (they hide so well sometimes).

Ah cool stuff ;)

I remember spending some time going back and forth after we got access to the serverkit, not sure if the editor got entirely retrofitted
but it should be pretty darn close.

I did dig out the code a few days ago, so will have a go at it now that the fall marking hell is over.
(Was looking for something more entertaining to do than work today ;-)

EDIT:  hmmm ... seems to run ok for SP dbs, but there's a crash on exit editing the serverkit db.  Seems to be a destructor freeing something that has already been freed (I hate tracking down memory issues ... of any flavour ;)

Very good. The Baseline will be back in a few days running alongside The Forge on Thor. So much on the go... I want to finish making the oci compatible with eaw and get the texturing figured out on the blender import script (so close), and... and...  ;D

Currently, there are 8 accounts on this server (EAW: Baseline) and there are 33 accounts on OP: The Forge. I suspect you may be thinking of Strayy's Tavern EAW server which is a long running server. The Tavern is quite reliable and consistent.

This EAW server is to help me establish the current "Baseline" and to facilitate "back-porting" of the oci (linked in first post of thread) from OP to EAW. The OCI is about to get a major overhaul, along with EAW. ;)

Regards,

1.) Not sure 3 months counts as a Necro-post. Maybe a "back of the ambulance last second chest shock revival as the vehicle pulled up to the ER door"-post.

2.) AWESOME!

Bonk, what port should I forward? I have no clue. Btw, I do know how to forward ports in my router.

In short, I just need the port numbers and whether it is tcp or udp or both.
