yep, you heard it. there is now a functional and operational earthquake detector and early warning system in place in palm springs california area. (i was there in january and had i known about it i would have gone and looked at it ) it can register both "p waves" and the damaging "s waves" and perform numerous functions upon detection, from alarms to important system shutdown.

Good, but not particularly impressive considering the fact that Japan has done this for decades.
