Title: =/\= last lunar eclipse until 2014, vesta3 in 3D, phobos-grunt dead in space,
Post by: stoneyface on December 03, 2011, 05:18:59 pm
you might want to actually get  up early on dec 10th as  there will be a lunar  eclipse and it will be the last until 2014!  read here for details: http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2011/02dec_lunareclipse/ (http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2011/02dec_lunareclipse/)  plus interactive map of viewable areas http://shadowandsubstance.com/ (http://shadowandsubstance.com/)

a cool video was released by the NASA team in charge of the vesta3 asteroid mapping. if you have a pair of 3d glasses you can get the full effect. if you don't have a pair of 3d glasses you can still get a good view of vesta. watch here: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/dawn/news/dawn20111201.html (http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/dawn/news/dawn20111201.html)

well the phobos-grunt project has been officially closed. after a brief re-invigoration of hope after it phoned home days after it's batteries were supposed to be dead, all other efforts to fix the satellite have failed. i feel bad for the russian team as this project went from bad to worse to hopeful back to worse. orbital debris experts predict that the probe's orbit will decay in january-february and fall to earth around that time... read here for details: http://www.spaceflightnow.com/news/n1112/02phobosgrunt/ (http://www.spaceflightnow.com/news/n1112/02phobosgrunt/)

finally in a bizarre story about deep sea gardening... yes you heard me! it has been discovered that yeti crab that live around deep sea thermal vents "garden" bacteria on it's claws and body spikes, which it eats and lives on. this bizarre looking creature has many spikes on it's body which it uses to harvest bacteria to grow and eventually consume. there is a video supplied which show that the crab also "waves" it's arms around to collect bacteria. check it out here: http://www.nature.com/news/yeti-crab-grows-its-own-food-1.9537 (http://www.nature.com/news/yeti-crab-grows-its-own-food-1.9537)

Caught the total one last December...stood outside freezing my ass off for 20 min watching the moon turn that funky blood red color.

Was totally worth it!
