Title: Star Trek Online
Post by: Scottish Andy on February 14, 2012, 02:51:27 pm
I've started playing it. I've started taking screenshots. Should those of us who have done likewise start and contruibute to a thread where we post our gorgeous, sexy screenies?

YAY! Okay, here are some of mine. My captain, Lathena. My ship, the Fearless. And a dramatic hero pose of Lathena on Earth (TerraMain) Spacedock, looking out over Britain and Europe.

Cool, hmm?

I actually have to wait for a graphics card to run the thing full specs...but it runs well enough at full specs now to get some niiiice screenies if I take the time to turn it up when I don't need the framerate.;)

The one with the USS Stormbringer above those planetary rings is my personal favorite.

No Klingon ships? I'd like to play, but between having a newlyborn (11 dec '11) and Starcraft 2, I have no time left...

That, my friend, would be awsome

Congrats, Grim! Don't worry; I have two young boys and most of the time I spend playing is when I should be either having together time with my wife or in the wee hours when I am sleeping.

So I don't get on too much.

Frey, that would be pretty awesome. Larry here has friended me on STO but I've yet to see him there. I also don't know how to really play yet... it's fiendishly complicated for me.

Grim, yeah, there's Klingon ships, but I was playing my Feddie when I started fiddling with the graphics settings for the first time.  I'll drag the D-7 out of mothballs (upgraded last week) and get some pics of her soon.

And congrats on the mini-Angel of Death!

This is my second go-round on STO. Just unlocked Klingons again. Got Dath'mar, the new Gro'mokh, and a nice one of the Tokijin approaching spacedock.

It takes 24 levels as a Feddie to unlock Klingons, and Klingons start at level 20.  Doing it like that was a dumb move, IMHO, but they are apparently planning it so you can play a Klingon right from level one ( I don't know if that's with or without unlocking them).  If I remember right, their original idea for the Klinks was that they were gonna be PVP only, an option you unlocked later after you were more familiar with the game, sort of like LOTRO's monster play.

When I first tried STO there was almost no storyline or quest content on the Klingon side of things.  Fortunately that has changed.

Ship wise, as a Feddie you start with a Tier One 'Light Cruiser' (Miranda, Centaur or Shi'kahr class or a kitbashed hybrid using parts thereof).  Once you advance to Lt. Cdr (Tier 2) you have to pick your next ship type:  either an escort (focused on agility and DPS), a cruiser (focused on tanking) or a science ship (focused more on buffs and debuffs).  You're not locked in to one class by this choice and can get a different type of ship at the next tier, if you want.  Rog, for example, had a Nova-class science ship as his Lt. Cdr ride, but switched to a tactical escort at Commander.

You can also buy additional ships with dilithium, which you can earn in-game.

Klingons have essentially the same setup, except you don't have to mess around with the Tier 1 ship (A B'rel-class Bird of Prey) if you don't want to.  You start with a Tier 2 ship, I believe, and it can either be a BoP (agility and a 'battle cloak' which you can use in combat), a Raptor (DPS, mostly) or a cruiser (much like the cruiser's on the Feddie side with more agility and more forward weapons;  Feddie ships have balanced weapons slots and tend to be best used as old-school, broadside-to-broadside type ships).

And no, you are not confined to space.  Many missions have ground components, and there are ground 'war zones' for PVP and PVE.

In fact, you even get bridge officers you can take down planetside with you, and you can customize their names and appearance.  To allow the same kind of variety the Fed side has with this, the game backstory explains how the Klingons conquered or absorbed a few less-seen Trek races (including the Gorn) and these races now serve in the fleet...and yes, are available to play as PCs as well.  There's a lot of Orion females running around in command of Klingon ships.

Incidentally, what is one of the creepier missions I've ever played on an MMO is in this game and mostly ground based.  Playable by both sides, too.

I grabbed the flashlight. It was like one of those really cheap, 90's dollar store kind that kinda made whatever you shined it at a little brighter, kinda. Added to the creepiness. Loved it.

Got lost under a ramp too...loved that. Not really.

My Gorn weapons officer seems to have developed a fondness for the targ in the back of the Klingon's entry-level shuttle, plus a pick of STO La'ra and L'dar piloting the thing.
