How do you read an SSD?
« on: January 17, 2003, 02:56:19 pm »
Just wondering if any of you SFBer's out there can point me to something that will show me how to read a SSD.... things like ship hull size, amount of shuttles/fighters/PF's.....

Thanks,

Well, it's pretty easy usually. For power, just count the number of boxes of AWR, APR, etc. Shields is the same. Some boxes don't have an obvious function unless you understand the abbreviations used, so what specifically are you having problems with?

Okay, more starwars than Star Trek...did you know SSD is also abbreviated Star Wars slang (at least in some circles) for Super Star Destroyer?  With that in mind...another way answer your question is...

Do you really want to try to read that???

Each box means a specific system usually. Shuttle bays are marked "SHTL" usually. The # boxes is the # shuttles it can hold. If it has certain special marks, it means the bay can hold fighters, or possess mech links for PF attachment. There are boxes for hull marked F HULL, R HULL, C HULL or just HULL. That tells you roughly how tough a ship is to hurt significantly. Nothing on the SSD explicitly says what hull class the ship is, if thats what you are asking. However, the MOVE cost of the ship usually gives it away. A cost of 1 is a heavy cruiser. Light cruisers are usualyl 2/3. DDs are 1/2. FFs are 1/3. Heavy Battlecruisers are usually also 1. The DNs are 1.5 and BBs are 2.

That was probably a bunch of random information you were NOT asking for, but your question was a little vague.

The inital sfb SSD's, that came printed front and back on sheets of paper and had to be cut apart had no information on them except for the actual shields, sensor/scanner and damage control/excess damage tracks plus shields.

The more modern ones have one ship per side (usually) and all the weapons tables needed for that ship, as well as shield minimal+full power costs, life support costs, IIRC hull size, turn mode, move cost, everything needed for that ship. Indeed, carriers/scs had boxes for all their shuttles/fighters to show weapons fired/damage as well as booster packs when there was room, otherwise they had in some cases sheets with entire carrier/scs/sscs groups on it. Same with P/F's, nothig more fun than keeping track of 6 P/F SSD's and doing EA for all of them.

Currently, and depending on what product you buy, EVERYTHING you need, including a 32 impulse movement chart is on the SSD, which greatly cuts down on memorization and book work during play.

For those that find SFC complicated, they would simply scream like a bitch and run if they were forced to play SFB, rofl. It is, ALOT of work, and for some of us, who grew up playing games with pen and paper, grease pencils and dice, it is MORE FUN that way.

Have a nice day!

Ahhh, those were the days.

And we had to walk 10 miles barefoot in the snow, uphill both ways, to get to the gaming shop to get the latest Captain's Log so we could go through the addendum to find out they'd closed that ridiculous loophole the resident rules lawyer was trying to exploit. Memories. :D

You had feet?! And snow too?! We had to walk through hot lava on our bloody ankle stumps just so we could press our noses on the glass of the game shop, hoping to one day to buy an SSD booklet.

Are you getting back into the old game Bearslayer?

I've got (I think) a pile of old SFB stuff around here, somewhere.  You're welcome to it if you want.

never could find anyone to play lol.. it scared away too many people (anything with a rulebook bigger than 4 pages tends to do that...)

had the original and expansions 1-3 and the carrier add on for commander's edition.. and later picked up a bunch of the captains edition stuff

I think i'll page through it while i'm stuck 'in battle'
