was SFU a dynamic 2 3 or 5  gamespy address? if  so, it's  probably toast like everthing else.

well,  from what I hear,   and I can't be 100% sure this is correct, if the owner didn't have a  backup it's  gone. The server was formatted.

Doesnt the battleclinic site have a stack of some older SFC 1 and 2 stuff along with SFC 3?  That plus the shipyards at http://www.stcd.sgnonline.com and the modding sites like StarYards that STGD is hosting should keep everyone ticking along until SFU comes back online.

Even if the database for SFU wasnt backed up, the files should still be there as they used fileplanet, all SFU has to do is re-add those ships already in there fileplanet server back into a fresh database, sure, it will take them a few days to manually type all that stuff in, but they will be back :)
