Are you still on satellite?  Wouldn't the latency be an issue?

Yeah Nem, I'm still on satelite, however, if it's just a server, I'll set it up in Oklahoma City , since they have cable there.

I have been able to play those mmorpg games, using a satcon, but I doubt it would work as a host too well.

Think of it this way as well.. if you do a server, then all that really would be needed is to max out that RAM to 4GB of the best DDR SDRAM(or if it can take DDR2 , then go for that) and get a server OS.. then you'll have a nice little server :) .

Actually, I don't claim the glory.  We really don't plunder, since whatever we make we either funnel into our secret plans for dominion over the temporal plains.  And they don't really like fame.

So long as he doesn't model them himself.  If he does, he'll hardly ever get sales, but plenty of hits.

 Upgrade some of the components already mentioned and set it up as a DVR/Media server for the whole house? Just throwing that out as it hasn't been mentioned.

Yeah, first thing I do will be to upgrade it. Will have to wait until next month though. Then I will play with Linux MInt while locating a server OS. Might do a dual boot then.

Linux can be a server OS and some of the programs that you want might run under Wine on Linux.  Some programs actually run better under Wine than on Windows.

Ok, joke out of the way, I an looking forward to using Linux as a server. But I'll be honest bro, If it does nothing to help with SFC games here, I will go with windows here.

I seemed to recall you and some others once talking about building/having a trebuchet, which is why I posted about the ballista, I though it would "round out" the collection.

I'd love to host a server myself, it just hasn't been practical. 

I have just upgraded (still downloading patches) to LinuxMint 5 and have done some testing of Wine.  In the previous version SFC2:OP crashed the desktop environment.  Right now it gets at least as far as inputting the CD Key (now I have to find the CD case so I can test further).  I haven't yet tested the server kit that I have, but being on dialup it isn't practical to host a server anyhow.  Such games as NWN 1 and 2 are both working (which is somewhat surprising as they are just using the Windows install copied over the network not an actual install - the  same applies to SFC by the way) so Wine is doing pretty well on this update to LinuxMint. 

IF you can get the server functions working on LinuxMint that you want you can kill two birds with one stone, host the servers and experiment with Linux (while not having the expense of a Windows server a third bird for free ;) ). 

Have fun whichever OS you end up installing.
