read about this at slashdot and was intrigued. i would assume they looked at the success of american army and the huge popularity of mmo's and decided this was a good route to take. i say anything to get today's youth interested in NASA  and space exploration is a good thing. here is a link for the story: http://ipp.gsfc.nasa.gov/mmo/

i can't be 100% sure but i think it is definitely the halflife engine that they are using.  take a look and see what you think. feel free to give your opinion here. i would like to see what not just gamers but non-gamers alike think.

Good idea but just more damn taxpayer $ thrown away. The private sector could do this without goverment costs.
