peerchat.gamespy.com is acting up
« on: February 13, 2003, 08:35:23 am »
I have noticed lately that peerchat.gamespy.com
has been dumping the D2 serverplatform's chatbot
from the channel. (My local IRC server is not displaying
this behaviour)

I get the feeling that gamespy has changed their IRC
server to kick any channel "moderators" (correct term?)
Which the PrimeRadiantIIX chatbot seems to run as.

I have also noticed that peerchat.gamespy.com has been up
and down like a yo-yo lately.

Is gamespy aware of The Dynaverse server's chatbot
functions? Who would we contact there to inform them?

Maybe west.gamesnet.net would be a better solution?

I will continue to monitor the situation and perhaps test
the serverplatform's chat functions on west.gamesnet.net.

Wow, I got a response to an e-mail I sent to gamespy!

They said that they would be in contact with Taldren about this.

Unfortunately I think that means they will not change their IRC server
back to the way it was, but may ask Taldren to patch EAW, OP and SFC3.
(ack! - sure hope not...)

I don't think it's just me thats been having this trouble with peerchat.gamespy.com.
I recall the chat pooping out regularly on many other D2 servers too.
The chat server itself is often up but will not accept a connection from the
D2 serverplatform.

Anyway, hopefully they can work out a stable chat solution between them.
I know the Dynaverse community would appreciate it alot.

Gamespy even said  "If there's anything else we can do to help, please let us know."
Should we ask them about hosting the D2 directory servers in the future? (Is that
a good idea? Or are they already doing so? I know they are providing the user authentication...).

I am beginning to be impressed with
Gamespy's responsiveness, I was just
contacted by their Developer Relations Manager!

He was asking for details on the function of the
D2 server's chatbot. I told him what I know, but
I really don't understand exactly what the D2
server's chatbot does or how it does it.

Is it hosted by the individual D2 servers or is it
hosted by the WON directory server?
I'm thinking it is hosted by the individual D2
servers and get's it's numbered name (PrimeRadiantIIX)
from information gathered from the WON server.

This is all speculative however. Does anybody know,
for sure, how the D2 server chatbot(s) work and what
they do exactly?

Well, after talking with gamespy yesterday it
seemed to stabilise somewhat. It didn't kick
the D2 server from the chat channels all day,
but come 11pm bingo - bye bye D2 server -
no chat for you!  You are a very, very bad
server! (waves finger Seinfeld style...)

Hopefully they will work on it more today,
so I am back to using my local chat server
as it does not exhibit this behaviour.

I'm expecting them to let us know when they
find the problem.

Try monitoring your chat channels using
an IRC client and you will find that the D2
server (as PrimeRadiantIIX) is getting kicked
from the chat channels. I am unclear on
the exact functions of the server on the chat
channels but I think it is the intermediate
between the IRC server and players and
controls communications. Note that in an
external IRC client you will be able to see the
D2 server on the chat channels and each player
has a long string of numbers after their name
that does not apear in game unless your character
name messes up the string handling somehow.

The PrimeRadiantIIX (D2 server) is getting kicked
from the chat channels when I use peerchat.gamespy.com.
This does not happen when I use a local
IRC server.
