SFC1 question... about lighting

I remember years ago, just before EAW came out in stores, that you could adjust the lighting somehow in SFC1.  I heard you could actually lower the ambiant lighting so things appeared darker, unfortunetly their was no Illumination in SFC1 like we have now with the later SFC versions.  

Does anyone know if this is true?
