What do convoys do in SFC3 Conquest campaigns?

I have been playing a single player campaign match and the Borg are winning. I can take down everything but the super Cube and was wondering if there was any way to hurt the borg besides killing their ships. What impact do convoys have on the game and what happens when I attack and destroy them?

Really? What a waste! I thought they impacted hex ownership or defense values and I have been stamping them out like bugs. Oh well, it felt good even if it didn't do anything.........
