ATTN: ALL!!! Taldren Community Awards!!! - V2 NOW AVAILABLE!
« on: October 02, 2004, 04:14:19 pm »
Ladies and Gentlemen,

If I could have a moment of your time, I would like to inform you of a project i just stared. I feel that very little has been done to honour those who have contributed much to the community. I was inspired, and so I have created these; Various commendations to be awarded to people so that they and the community know that they are a benevolent titan among men.

So that people are aware of your deeds, please, if you are awarded a medal, place THE RIBBON into your signature, the medal is for your own personal site.

Now, for the list of awards, and their descriptions.

Several people have PMed me asking for commendations for them from me. Look, im not really the person whos handing them out, i just make them. I know all of you have contributed many things to the community - but please dont list qualifications.

HERE IS THE LINK TO THE COMMENDATIONS GALLERY.  http://gallery106414.fotopic.net/

Heh, you have to earn 'em, just as everyone else.

The only one you can award yourself are the ones related to Karma.

EDIT

if anyone else has any ideas for awards, let me know

Could a moderator pin this up?

A fantabulously marvelous idea Fury, if only for the fact that now people will be extra nice or productive in the hopes of getting a nice shiny ribbon in their sig, in the end we all want a badge announcing to the world how great we are, though I can see some people getting stupidly over-crowded sigs.

Yeah you could name it for that chick in TNG, the one who designed the Galaxy class, Geordi fell in love with her hologram. Brahms I think her name was.

On the racial awards, are the RMs and A/RMs free to grab them?  If so, how long are they authorized to "wear" it, as long as they're active, or is it a permanent thing?

Oh, I'd nominate Brezgonne for the Tholian award, due to the sheer number of models he's made for them.  If it's possible, he needs clusters to represent his Tholian representation since the days of SFC 1...

I do not really follow Dynaverse events, but if i can be briefed id be more than willing to make some.

I think i am going to have to reduce them in size, say to half of what they are, or for some people, they are gonna take up a whole page.

Fury:

As a representative (though not the only representative) from the D2 side of things:

1.  Am I supposed to tell the D2 RMs and A/RMs to go ahead and grab their appropriate racial ribbons?
2.  I'd be careful about drawing up ribbons for campaign participation, unless we get a system like Battleclinic has over here.  If campaign ribbons were handed out to cover as many campaigns as possible, including past campaigns participated in, many people would have 20-40+ ribbons just in campaign awards.

And on the clusters thing, your citations are worded generically enough that it becomes very difficult, if not impossible, to earn a second ribbon of the same class.  How many times can you go above and beyond the call of duty in a class you've already gone above and beyond in?  The only reason I called for Clusters in Brezgonne's case is because he's been doing the Tholian thing on SFC boards longer than SFC's been in existance.  For a race that hasn't been officially included in any SFC game yet.

I do realize that you can get doubled up from racial awards (RM for a race then a second citation for having gone above and beyond for that race).  In a worst case scenerio, you can just design a cluster device or 2, and the recipients are responsible to paste the cluster(s) into place on their own ribbons.

Brez isn't talking sheer Physical age, cause there's a lot of people here physically older than us, and I think there's even one or 2 that can hit mine and Brez's combined age.

We're talking age as in how long we've been following SFC.  Brez has been around since the SFC 1 boards first opened, and I think I've been around since the spring after the game got released...

With a copyright date of 1999, that means many of the people following SFC since the beginning have been here close to (if not longer than) 5 years now...  :o

Some Dynaverse awards would definitely be welcome. I suggest the following categories:

- Dynaverse server admin award, in recognition of significant contributions in either running or designing a dynaverse campaign (usually done by a team these days)

- Forum administrator award, in recognition of running forums and/or managing fleet communications for a Dynaverse campaign (usually the moderators or admins but also RMs as well)

- Fleet awards for participating in a Dynaverse campaign. The FPF already has a set of these awards, however we do not currently have the associated icons to go with them. These range from highest prestige, number of kills, etc.

- Mission scripters award, in recognition for creating mission scripts used either on GSA or a Dynaverse campaign.

- Technical support award, in recognition for outstanding contributions in technical areas of the game eg. SQL testing, decoding blob formats in the campaign flatfile, creating utlity programs, etc etc. (possibly already covered by the Sisco award but needs further clarification)

Just so you wouldn't miss it on the D2 forum I'll repost my thoughts here.

I would suggest some Dynaverse additions.

Say:

The Nutter Award for players reaching the rank of Fleet Admiral or 300k on a server

The Mega Nutter Award for players reaching over 500k on a server

The Flubot Award for Players achieving the highest prestige on a major server

The Victory Award for players achieving more than 25 p v p kills on a server

The Dynaverse Ace Award for achieving more than 50 p v p kills on a server

The Montezuma Award for capturing 5 live opponents on a server

The Tripoli Award for capturing 10 live opponents on a server

The Dynaverse Saint Award for Adminining a major server

The Mother Teresa Award for Admining more than 5 major servers

The Holy Order of the T-bomb for intentionally killing a wingman on a major server

The Jerry Springer Award for mediating and sucessfully resolving disputes on the Dyna and the Forums

These are just some suggestions

P.S.

You might want to rename the awards with Federation connotations, sure not too many Klingon players would enjoy having the James T. Kirk Award, or perhaps allow races to contribute alternative names for the same ribbons.

I'd also rename the Darwin Award as there is already a more famous Darwin award in existance.....  ;D

I would be honoured to nominate Nannerslug for the Sisko award for his well appreciated efforts on the GAW mod for SFC3 (oh and the rest of  the development team who work in the background to make it happen). Generations at War in my opinion is what SFC3 should have been straight out of the box.

Just a quicky question...the era awards...should we just use them, or be nominated? Most of my stuff has been pre-TOS and Lost Era, so.... ;D

Oh, and I want to nominate guest aka red-green aka James Formo for the Hydran award...only logical. ;)

I nominate J'inn for the Sisko Award, Andromeda Quasar, and Archer's Star because he's a community leader, contributer, and has been granted a healthy chunk of +karma (93 pts.) by the rest of the community

Well since you don't seem to have them yet...

I'd like to nominate Sandman3D for the Pre-TOS and TLE era awards because, well he's made a lot of kickarse pre-TOS and TLE era models. Come to think of it Darkdrone did a load of pre-TOS stuff too, I mean a mountain of pre-TOS stuff.

Since Mackie has already posted unashamedly how he deserved awards I'd also like to point an imaginary internet finger in a subtle fashion towards all those federation kitbashes I've released recently (and some I did ages ago) *points his imaginary finger* LOL obviously Mackie's done far more so I don't really compare but a little self-promotion never hurt anyone. Except possibly the Russian royals in 1917. ;)

Okay guys, just to let you know, im going to be revamping the system. I feel it was sloppily executed with no real criteria - this much will be remedied...

Also for those who have personal sites, there are now going to be two images you recieve when you get a medal:

One is the Ribbon that you put in your signature - also there is going to be a cluster system: for example,

The Thompson award for the first time:

The Thompson award for the second time:

The Thompson award for the tenth time:

and also there is giong to be the actual medal, which you can download and palce on your own personal site
For example, the Thompson award:

I have also brought this to the Moderators attention, and hopefully it may be officially endorsed by the moderator.

It looks like I'm older than the pair of you......... I had a sobering thought the other day regarding age... I just got the Star Wars DVD set and realised that I'm older now than my MOTHER was when I first saw it.......

Brez isn't talking sheer Physical age, cause there's a lot of people here physically older than us, and I think there's even one or 2 that can hit mine and Brez's combined age.

Hmmmm   what if we took this idea a step further.  There are serveral awards mentioned that cover this ..   but not necessaily in the "life time acheivment area" for those STILL ACTIVE

ie:

Life time achievement for out standing work in Scripting:

1.  Karnak
2. Tracy G

For outstanding achievements in total game Moding:

NannerSlug ( for GAW )

Outstanding lifetime achievements in modeling:

1.  P81
2.  WZ
3.  DD
4.  Red Dragon
5.  Others ...  I know there are seveal others here ...

Outstanding Life time achievements for RM's

1.  SSCF Hooch
2.  Dogmatix
3.  Jinn
4.  Blade

(I'm almost certain to be forgetting or misrepresenting something or some one ...  so please take this in light of what we are attempting to say here !)

please note Life time achievers should have at least 2 - 3 years with the SFC community ...  preferably (but not mandatory) in more than one SFC game.

At any rate ..  I leave th rest of this in the capable hands of those who know the community better than I do !!

Over all I think this is an excellent idea.

(sorry ..  spell check is not working right now !)
thanks

Buzzard you forgot Evil Dave, the first one to really take mission scripting to a whole new level

As for RMs

you forgot Gook
Pharoah
Scipio
Drall
and Capt. Jeff

as well as others I'm sure

P.S.  Jinn was never RM but deserves every award we can throw at him anyhow.

I would really like to see the D2 side awards for although I appreciate the efforts of the very talented modellers we have, it is the guys and girls that actually get on the servers and play that makes or breaks my SFC Experience.

See the first post for an new list of Medals, plus what has to be done to get them. I took some ideas, sure, but i feel some would only serve to create an elitist feel.

Some of them I really did not forget...  I'm not sure what handle they are flying under now..  and I thought this was primarliy for those who were still here.

Any name not mentioned was not intentional ..  please believe me when I tell you this...  that is why I concluded the way I did..

You know I got several medals while i was in the navy. Most for doing nothing more than being on a ship for a few months and being able to do my job. I did get a couple for being in Beruit and being involved with "Operation Urgent Fury", but everyone who was anywhere near those places got medals for that.
I guess I don't think that it's that important to be recongnized for my contributions. If the purpose is to help people get involved in the community then i say that this is a good idea. But really I don't build models for the purpose of being recognized for it with ribbons in my sig.  I build models for the purpose of making the game more enjoyable. I share the models because I think everyone should have the chance to make tha game what they want it to be. Really i'm more of a lurker than anything else anyway.
And being old...., well I was in the navy during Beruit and the Granada thing so............

I like the new criteria, makes it actually feel like you've done something if you get one.

Small qvestion FOAS, For those awards based on numbers of releases - do you just say 'I've released X number of kitbashes' and get it?

by my count I've released about 107 models over the whole time I've been doing this.

Various Tholians in various versions, a dozen or so B5 ships, some Kzinti, some gorn, a fed or two, some Lyrans, some Orions, few andros, a few unique ships, ect

Sooo..... what does that translate into?

Would you mind greatly if I use this Idea for the next camp of our mod... If the answer is no then thats fair enough.. I will not mention it anymore... Just thought I would ask before I got accused of stealing an idea...

Thanks Fury ;D

Going through the list of ribbons (hey; I'm bored) it looks like I get:

Bronze Medal of Good Will (25+ Karma)

5 or 6 Platinum Crosses (~120 models released over time)

1x Azure Victory Awards (spread over all the servers I used to play on; I still remember pissing off the 1AF  ;D)

Tholian Ribbon

My own idea guys ..   awards are exactly that ....  they are "awarded".

IMHO the awards should be "bestowed" .. that was one of the reasons i mentioned the group of people that I did ..  as in a nomination for those awards.  (that was before the categories were revamped..  and improved ! ) I still feel like those nominations I made are valid and can be supported.  it should also be noted that I knew I missed some folk.. and that my post was not inclusive of all categories, and certainly not all inclusive of all awards that I felt should be bestowed.  I hope this is not misunderstood since up to this point the proper distribution of these awards has not been clarified.

I think what has been said thus far regarding categories, and those worthy of such merit are valid.  I'm not sure what steps are needed to approve them.  Unfortunately not everyone reviews this thread subsequently they do not nominate or participate in the process.

At any rate ...  just throwing out more food for thought !!  and  ..  I'm starting to sound like an old empty horse drawn wagon so I'll stop at that.

Some of them, go ahead, award them to yourself - the karma thing for one, because the proof is right in front of everyone. The ones that indicate how many models you have released, well thats a bit of an iffy - because im not talking about models that were ONCE available a long time ago - im taking models that are available NOW.

Most improved modeller...... this would be a good award....

I would like to nominate both Fallen Warrior... and Sandman 3D for this award.... their work has improved greatly over the last year or so.

Their are obviously more..... FOA.. your work has improved ten fold..... so many people deserve this award  ..... ohhh King Constatine also.... his work has improved greatly......  ;)

Please make this a possibility I think it is well deserved!!!!

how does this all work then? If people are nominated for an award, and further people are needed to give additional nominations before the award is given, how do we know? will a list of nominations be displayed or is it just pot luck?

I had a look through the award images (very nice work btw), are the ones with additional silver and gold pips for multiples of the same award?

Also, who's overseeing the whole thing?

Sorry for loads of probably really obvious questions, just that reading the thread its not really clear what the score is

If one wanted to for example, you an award. they would start a thread saying "i wanna give thu11s xyz award"...depending on the award, X amount of people will need to reply to that thread saying "yeah, i agree"

Yes, no star means its awarded once, one star means twice, two stars means thrice so on and so forth. One gold star indicates 6, 2g=7, 3g=8, 4g=9, and the fancy one means 10.

Also, who's overseeing the whole thing?

Well, at the moment its kind of an honour system thing, but i believe moderators are going to be using them soon.

I would like to nominate J-O-K-E-R  for a couple of awards right up front:

1.  Though I'm not sure how many ships he has done altogether, I do know he has hosted for quite some time Tutorials for modeling and texturing.

2.  As well he has been building models since SFC-1.  (Kinda been around for quite a while).

3.  Platinum Cross Award....  he has met this qualification more than once and currently building another ship ( possibly 2 that I know of ) for others.  His latest work, when completed, might even qualify for the Silver Cross (We'll know when the final model is released and see the detail on the Texturing).

I respectfully request that this motion be reviewed by the appropriate personnel for these awards.

thanks

Great work... You've obviously given this a lot of thought.  My only concern is that the whole reason for doing this justifies the work you have put in and that it wont all be forgotten 6 months down the line.  Ooops, bit pessimistic there,  :P perhaps you could get someone at Taldren to go "Lets make this official"... Not that it needs to be official... In fact I'm looking too deep into this one I think and whilst my own contribution to the community is extremely limited, it's great that we recognise those that have done the biz, so to speak.... Grammatically poor but you get my drift..... Yeah, I decided to quit smoking today....  :-\ :-\ :-\

Yeah, it's pretty crap..... Apparently you need something called "willpower".... not too sure what that is.... Though I have enlisted the help of "2mg Mint Lozenges" which will help... The only trouble with them is that they dont warn you about them tasting like a Polo mint that's been wiped 'round the inside of an ashtray....   >:( >:( >:(

hmmm  sooo  that means the other nominations we made earlier  ( life time stuff  .. ) has not been reviewed and is to be posted else where too??

Might I make a little suggestion:

1.  We need a separate "stickie" for nominations and approvals for awards.

2.  We need a moderator to assist in clarification on nominations in the event something is miscatagorized..   but obviously the nomination is well intended ...  FOA  ..  this was your idea you know it better than anyone else !!

3.  I noticed several other nomination listed in this thread as well ...  looks like that all needs to be translated and tallied when the new post is done too !  (That way we know what the standings are ...  )  OR ..  perhaps this needs to be reviewed by other forum personnel, tracked and results posted as needed.

just a couple of thoughts to help clarify and expedite the process.

thanks

Actually, to thrown in my two cents here.. it may be better to have a child board rather than however many stickied threads.. that way, as ideas for new ribbons, new ways of nominating, etc happen.. all those new stickied threads won't make any new posts in the main forum start showing up on Page 2.  ;)

As well, nominations for people can be done in their own seperate threads, which means that when someone wants to nominate someone, they can scan the board and see if they're already there.. and if not, create a new thread starting the nomination process.  Keeping it self-contained like that will just prevent spreading things all over the forum as time goes on.

Just my idea on it.. :)
..ooOOoo..totally useless information..ooOOoo..

Agreed ..

as long as it is easier to get the nominations posted, reviewed, and finalized:  that is the jest of my point.

Those who are more adapt to setting up a forum would know the best possible solution, and make the best application of the idea !!

Attempting to continue to add to one single thread would eventually become entirely too difficult to keep track of.

To be honest I don't like the idea of awards. Namely due to the fact that the community tends to have certain 'clicks' Namely Outalance. Of course Outalance will nominate all the team members on Outalance. Makes sense, but there tends to be an alienation of modelers who contribute tons of stuff but don't socialize as much on the forum. So awards likely end up being more of a popularity contest than based solely on merit.

Quality of work versus quamity is also a consideration. Then you have to ask what guidelines you are judging models buy. Is the most important thing how good the model looks or is it more important for the model to be used on older machines? There is also many more people that prefer OP over SFC3 on the forums. So someone making models for OP would likely get more recognition. Another point is some modelers do the entire process do to not being able to find anyone interested in the same genre of models. Doing the entire process ie: meshing, texturing, mapping, hard pointing, break model and game conversion is more time consuming. Thus a modeler doing the entire process can't turn out 12 ships a week. Where as that same modeler could do 12 meshes a week if someone then did the rest of the process. So then is the modeler who works on less ships by himself contributing less to the community?

Anytime you start nominating people, someone will get slighted. I could start listing some modelers that I feel do the best work or have contributed the most but I am bound to leave someone off. I don't know if anyone remembers what happened when Taldren sponsered a model contest. They even had prizes such as Video cards and 3d instruction books. Well it didn't go well. I don't think this would implode as ther is no monetary awards but I still don't like it.  :P

Any time that ANYONE offers recognition for community contributions someone is going to feel stepped on and overlooked.  The only negative comment that I've read in this thread is yours RG, and that probably doesn't surprise anyone.  This certainly isn't the first time you've expressed your feelings about outalance, and frankly it's starting to smack of jealousy.  Outalance members are getting recognition that you feel you deserve but never get.  I certainly am not the voice of outalance,  but I'm pretty confident that most feel the same as I do.  Make the models for yourself.  Share them with those who want them.  Don't hang your self esteem on the opinions of strangers.

if you look at the date of the last post before RG's you will notice that its Nov 24 long before OutaLance was ever started here and has sorta been a dead thread. personally i think everyone deserves some sort of recognition for what they have done to advance the community but that usually comes in the form of their models being used in game or playing that persons mod or on thier server.
[/ rant on]i have learned alot being part of Outalance and it has helped me grow as a modeller. yes OutaLane is becomming a large force here but you have to remember we get together to help eachother and compliment eachothers skills for example i can mesh and map textures but i can not create textures, F_W can make textures but not mesh so we often team up to work on things (ie. the Warhammer.) OutaLance is not some uber power dictator here we are just people getting together and doing what we love to do and thats build models so if anyone feels like outalance is stealing all the glory i appoligize that is not our intent we are here for the community and will always be. [/rant off]

RG your ships and mods are well respected and i would nominate you for you great Andromeda models and i will lend you a hand anytime you need just PM me or catch me on MSN.
DK dude personally i think you were a little harsh on the man just my opinion.

Your comment sounds more negative than mine. I could care less about awards as I don't need the boost for self esteem. I don't base my esteem on my skill as a modeler. If I did I wouldn't have any self esteem ROFL. If you ask me your just trying to bait me. Just what the hell is negative about expressing an opinion? I don't feel I disrpected anyone.  Outalance is a monopoly.  If it works for you, great. One thing though, modelers use to be more open about sharing tips. It used to be common place. Since Outalance was formed it seams to me that the sharing of model pointers is kept inside Outalance. To some extent, I could care less as I like trouble shooting problems and coming up with my own solutions. That way what I do has a uniqueness to it. I have picked up lots of pointers in the past from the forum just like everyone else I imagine.

If I were to nominate 1 person in the entire forum it would be Wicked Zombie. He is all business. Only 170 posts, only posts about models. His work is professional level,  quality stuff. But saying that slights alot of other people. In fact I would hazzard a guess that WZ wouldn't even want  to be nominated. All the more reason he should be.

sorry but i need to stop in on this. when i started, pre-outalance, it was manitobashipyards. alot of ppl had nowhere to go no help, thats what started it and thats how outalance is all about helping each other out and any one who else asks for help. if i ever feel that it starts going the other way u can be assured it would end there. as far as u go RED_GREEN u make some awesome models. very awesome models. and yes u deserve recognition for them. so please never feel like u r ever left out cause u arnt. and  the most important thing is make and make models.

I've said it time and again........If it wasn't for Mani, NONE of this would ever have started. I actually miss the old site. I got my start there because of you. Is there a FOUNDERS award ??? I nominate Mani for it.

Just out of curiosity at 0030 in the morning when I had nothing better to do I read this thread. This isn't the kind of thread that normally interests me, but meh.
Anyway, I digress. It struck me that when I returned after being away from this board for quite some time, maybe 6 months or so I returned to quite a different place, reading this thread reminded me of one of my first impressions: I thought I had come to the wrong site, because at the top of the models forum is a big stickied thread about one modeling group's workload.
'Interesting', I thought to myself, 'I thought that this wasn't "Outalance's" website/forum (didn't have a clue who/what they were then) - so why is something, (that in my mind that likes to normalise everything logically, remove duplication of data and have data sorted into the correct place) that clearly belongs on this modeling group's individual website, or indeed their own forum, on this forum?

Do other modeling groups display a workload schedule here? Can anyone actually name any other modeling groups? What kind of impression does it give to newbies that visit this forum?

I'd just like to point out that I am completely NOT anti-Outalance. I think that it is great that they operate together on the premise of spirit of co-operation, and I admire the way that they have replied to some of the posts in this thread that could have been handled very differently if they had 'hot heads'. However, I don't think that something that should be on their own website, should be at the very top of the model forum, stickied until the day that the server dies a death, or dynaverse is sucked into a black hole (whichever is the longer).

I just think that it gives off the wrong impression and I wanted to share my thoughts and feelings from that time, since they were resurrected by reading this thread.
