The European Commission is less than pleased with Microsoft's new moniker for a Media Player-less version of Windows. Redmond has been requested by the Commission to return to the drawing board to come up with something less pejorative than the proposed 'Windows XP Reduced Media Edition'. 'We believe the name was fully compliant,' maintained a Microsoft spokesperson. 'The essence of these new versions of Windows is that they provide less multimedia functionality than the regular versions of Windows. Our original recommendation reflected this, was descriptive of the product and reduces potential confusion in the marketplace.'A new name there will be, however. In the 'spirit of compromise' Microsoft is agreeing to make a change. 'We are now working together with the Commission on an alternative name and description that is in the interest of consumers and allows them to differentiate the products,' the spokesperson added.The European Commission finally ruled last week that Microsoft should provide Windows XP without Windows Media Player automatically installed, in order to give more space for competition from third-parties, such as Real Networks.
