I know Valero is not crying, neither will be the other oil and refinery companies. Katrina was a Godsend to the U.S. energy companies. Don't look for too much help from your politicians, both parties are very much in their campaign fund donation pocketbooks.

Up here in this cold weather area most heating is natural gas. When the cost goes beyond a certain point the provincial government starts sending out rebate checks ( the higher the price, the higher their royalties) so that takes some of the sting out of it here.
On a side note the provincal government said yesterday they were going to cut some checks for us little people here due to the huge budget surplus due to the high oil costs... about damn time... how about some tax cuts ya bastards!

I put a wood burning insert into my fireplace.  It uses convection to heat air and it blows out.  It will heat the house like nothing you've seen.

My gas bill went from $289 in January, to $18 + about $30 worth of firewood.

yeah, it's starting to look like I'll be spending LOTS of time at work to stay warm.

Mom wants to keep the heat at 63 all winter <shivers>
I was never here, you were never here, this conversation never took place, and you most certainly did not see me.

My mom had 12 brothers & sisters growning up... so things were just a tad tight money wise as they grew up...

That translated to my sister & I growing up with the heat NEVER getting put on until November 1st & never going above 60 degrees F.

I grew up in the 'snow belt' in Youngstown Oh (about 1/2 between Cleveland OH & Pittsburgh, PA)

If you were cold, you told to either put on extra clothing or go do something to keep warm (usually that involved shoveling snow)

Well no oil company is going to get rich off of me this winter, I spent all spring and summer getting 8 cords cut and split for this heating season. I am also about to get a 27kw generator that runs behind the Deere (or IH) for a good price.

what is it with you people :P
decent way to keep a house warm; a huge central oven pit where you stuff whatever of your garbages and loads of w00d. water heating.
and besides, no one needs the inside temperature to be more than +15'c ;P

I'm with Dracho...insert for the fireplace..go out to the forest on "clear the woods" days...gas heat and a heat pump....

But you have to make the investment..but it really pays off, especially since I still get the 15% discount on electricity for having the heat pump...

I have 2 pellet stoves. 1 for the Rec room and one for the family room. They are incredibly efficient and will run you out of the house if I even try to crank them up.

I can get by on 1 bag of pellets easily here, all year. Cost? $18.98. :)

heh... I remember this one time, barely, was quite drunk. stuffed my sauna stove/oven whatnot is the correct term to use here, with those darn WOODEN pellets.
I did stay a couple of minutes in the sauna until the temp hit +120'c but then i had to bail out, the stove started glowing slightly red and then going into a even more whiter shade of red and eventually it collapsed from the heat. the whole damn thing.

liqour + mackie & the lads staying in the sauna until the last moment + compressed wood pellets = BAD  ;D
