For the longest time the Interplay site has been pretty much dead, but the new placeholder on the site is, personally, a sign of hope personally.

Maybe if Interplay can get itself back in the game, maybe, who knows, this community might have something to look forward to in the future.

well, heck, even without them.  Since we have source to at least EAW as long as something is done with that so we can grow, the community can look forward to self support.  Then each of us will just have to recruit more players.

The source to EAW would be only to enhance it not make new games from it and it is only source as there is no engine and by todays standards it is rather old.It is hard to believe that OP has run as long as it has been doing. The license still belongs to Interplay as they own the rights to SFC1.This is why QuickSilver was able to use the code to make Tactical Assault as they can't make any new SFC games.

I would prefer to see some new versions out.

Technically, while your correct about SFC1, SFC2 EAW , OP and SFC3 are completely different.

EAW and OP were produced by Taldren, and SFC3 by Activision as the publisher and Taldren. When Interplay went KAPLOOEY, and for all intents and purposes become defunct from a business perspective, it's the same thing that happened for SFC3. The intellectual rights to the game still belong to InterPlay, sure, but it's

A.) Technically not standard by todays engine and game standards.

B.) Ceased as an ongoing development project, no one's been actively working on a SFC game for some time now.

So, if we have been *given* the source, as well as the Directory services and we have ran those for quite a few years now... and since Dynaverse.Net is run by a legitamite Non-Profit Organization - we've demonstrated a extended "stewardship" over the game, for lack of better terms. I've consulted with an attorney on this, believe me, because I'm not going to get involved with something on a personal basis that could impact my family.

Bottom line is : We have every intent to produce something to the likes of SFC4. We're going to go to Paramount once we've got a working demo, and we're going to ask them to allow us to release the game on a NON PROFIT basis. We're going to ask them to grant us a license so we can continue to use ST material. We're going to send a letter to Activision and let them know what we intend. If either go nuts over it and say no, then we'll move forward but won't use the name. Simple as that.

Why? Because ... if this comes together as I think it will... we're going to have the best modellers, scripters, coders and designers from ACROSS THE SFC COMMUNITY volunteering to participate in this project. No one "looses", everyone "wins". And a couple positive reviews on a SFC series game again wouldn't hurt Paramout, Activision, or the possibly re-emerging Interplay for that matter.

;)

'Nuff said, atleast for now.

Well, if Paramount has trouble with releasing the game as a NON PROFIT, you could always release an "update" to EAW, thus it would fall under the old license as it isn't a new game, but just a playablility update to bring the code up to new machine standards.  You open the ability to modify the game more by moving weapons and such to external files.  Thus the "new" part of the game will be player MODs, not official from Dynaverse.

If only my programming skills were as good as they use to be, I would try and help out.  Guess the best way to help out now is by voicing opinion and of course throwing extra cash to help out.  I don't want to see my favorite game fade away.

Regards,

I've always believed that Interplay screwed the pooch by turning SFC3 into a TNG abortion rather than finishing the original SFB universe by adding the Tholians and Andromedans.

Interplay had nothing to do with SFC3.  That was Activision.  And SFC3 at least had more moddability, which is why it survived as long as it did.  Had Activision given Taldren the time necessary to complete the game code, SFC3 would have been a much better game out of the box, with far more features than we could ever give it.

Opening up the game more, such as moving the weapons charatceristics so that they can be modified, is so so important.  Allowing modification of weapons could add a whole new dimension to modding.

Improving the ability to make scripts is the other "biggie" in my book.  Enhancing / modifying / updating FMSE, or a sister version, would be awefully nice.
