I've Finally Done It

I decided to release one of my stinky little kitbashes, and uploaded it to Battlclinic.  It's an early D5 made out of various models by Atrahasis.  He gave me leave to release it.  In my mind, the D5 ought to be the predecessor to the D6, as was established in Enterprise.  During later wars, the older ships were refitted and pressed into service to counter Federation destroyers.  I believe SFB has an early light cruiser called LD5, so you could use that designation if you are an SFB purist. 

I know It's sort of rough, especially the textures, but it is about the best I've ever managed to do.  So, how ashamed should I be of it?

Nicely done! It warms my Klingon heart to see such a fine Klingon set of ships.

Only negative comment: I'd like to see the older D5 have lit warp engines. Maybe have a one pod version too.

I can see the numerous possibilities of these two kitbashes alone.. More fodder for Romulan and Lyran tech exchanges, pirates and House Korgath. I can see these older ships being part of the fleet inventory of these races. Not every fleet has the latest ships.

Speaking of Kitbashes: Any chance to get a D-10B with a STOCK KCX command pod? How about an two pod tug from Atrahasis' original?

I have Tholian, Seltorian and Lyran pod retextures done and just waiting to be used with the new tug pods.

I wouldn't call these kitbashes stinky in anyway.  They look very good.

Yeah, textures aren't my strength.  It took me for ever to get them to this point.  I was just glad I was able to almost match the green kcal textures with the grey k5 textures.  If anyone with more talent would like to tidy the textures up a bit, I sure wouldn't object.

To me glowing plasma seems more advanced.  No-one in TOS had it, and the Klingons didn't get it until the last film.  As I said, anyone willing to clean up the textures would be welcome, so if in doing so you want to ad glowing plasma, go ahead.

That's a neat set of Romulan textures there.

The Lyran textures are from Dizzy's Lyran D5 retexture of Atrahasis' D5 added to your kitbashes. Again, I figure that the Camboro pirates, Lyran, Korgath and Romulan versions would later be refitted with TMP weapons to extend the hull lives for their mothball/reserve fleets.

These are still WIPs.

  This d5b kitbash screams scout to me... I can see House Korgath using this.

Anyway here are some TMP style versions of the D5B. I need darker pod textures I think...

I'm using the D7C textures by Atrahasis, his old D-5 predator textures and stock Taldren KCA textures that were originally tweaked by one of our early kitbashers/texture artists.

  Okay, here is a nice late TOS/early TMP version of the D5B using the pod textures from Atrahasis' DS9 Tribbles episode D-7. I'm using this as the F-6 right now. I like the 'beard'/sensor dome being slightly different in color. It's aesthetically pleasing IMHO.

Okay, it's not secret I love the TMP era and since the D5B uses Atrahasis' D5 textures I came up with this retexture.

I have only a couple of suggestions.  First, you might want to do something to add a hangar.  Atra's D5 had it in the standard Klingon position.  I moved it to the back end of the main body by altering the original textures to suggest a door.  If you want to use the kitbashed intake/vent section instead of the original but with the original textures, then the ship has no hangar. 

Second, I stretched out the flaring bits on the neck.  The windows with the original textures will look off.

If you want to use this instead of Atra's original, you might want to at least modify the dorsal "bulge thing" on the pod to conform to the TMP style, and maybe alter the intake section.  In my game, by the TMP era these ships would be too old to keep up, so new ships would be built to take their place.  I don't see the new war cruisers being replicas of the older ships; even if they kept the same basic design they would have more modern parts.

How good are you with mapping textures?  The wing textures are reused and mirrored, so I couldn't add decoration to the wings.  Would you be able to remedy that?

Believe it! This is a really good looking bash, and with KF's textures on it, it looks even better. I hope these textures get released!

Sorry guys, I have no model tools or skills to tweak the meshes or the textures beyond what is already placed on the model. Regarding ships being outdated... that never stopped the *cough* canon Trek writers from using 100 year-old ship designs in the Federation (miranda) and Klingon fleets (D7) in the TNG era... IDIC my friend Besides, these will make good non-vanilla pirate ships.

At any rate, I'll send my retextures to Johanobesus to tweak and ask Atrahasis for permission to post these at Battleclinic as these use his texture sets primarily.  I'll also send Atrahasis a copy.
