Trek web posted a small image one of the new ships from trek 11, that's been shown in Entertainment weekly....
Got to say, I like this ship a lot!

Saw it yesterday while posting on the STO forums.  I have to say that I'm under the impression that the Kelvin may be a TNG ship, but that's just my opinion on it.

I've seen other pictures of the movie.  Not sure what to make of the new bridge.  Makes you wonder what direction Trek is gonna go with this.
The pen is truly mightier than the sword.  And considerably easier to write with.

I wasn't alive for the TOS, but I remember the TNG coming on TV. I was raised on TOS though, and remember the excitement for TNG.
I can honestly say that i'm nothing but excited for this film, and design of the Kelvin appeals to me big time...

The Kelvin looks like an ENT-ified Saladin. One can make out the under-hung nacelle just under the lip of the saucer. Add in a navigational deflector at the top, and there ya go.

Everything looked OK until the bridge scene. Is this seriously the bridge? What I can see looks like a disappointment- looking more like a parody bridge than a serious attempt at Trek.

But I'll save my judgment until the movie. But what I want to know is why Kirk is climbing out of an Enterprise escape pod.

The Bridge we are Discussing

I think the bridge looks great.
It''s bright, and filled with technology, and kind of optimistic looking.
I also think it's like an update to the bridge in the first Trek film, rather than the TOS.

I also like how Pine is sitting in that chair in a very Kirk like manner..... I really am stupidly excited about this film. There is nothing that catches my attention like this. Not even Dark Knight had me this interested.

The Bridge almost looks too busy.  Though it seems to be an evolution of the NX-01 bridge.  The crew themselves though look the part.    The USS Kelvin is clearly a TNG era ship, as they say in the article that it plays a huge part in starting off the time travel portion of the movie.  I'm curious to see how this will fit into Nemesis.  I mean if it starts off as post Nemesis then how will they handle the whole Romulan/Reman thing?

UPDATE:  Wait a second... that registry is too low to be TNG.  OK, so I guess maybe that ship will be in the opening scene in the past, after the time travel event instead of before it.

There's a single nacelle slung beneath the saucer, opposite the "engineering section"

I'm not a fan of the bridge, but I am conservative on these types of things. Why didn't they choose to go with a slightly more primitive TOS bridge, like keeping the general feel of the colorful buttons and layout, and take out a station or something? This one is so spiffed-up, it looks like a step past TOS.

How can anyone say the Kelvin is a "modern" design? It doesn't look like a plastic bath toy like most of the TNG fleet. Ergo, it must be older.

Was thinking it looks more like it was put together from some one who was glue happy or did not read the instructions.
Would have been nioce it it had less of a kitbashed look to it

I just noticed the screens-on-wires at Uhura's console in this new bridge... harkening back to "The Cage", perhaps?

I liked the look and feel of the TMP bridge, which this is not. Reminds me of the 'Cameo Bridge' from Star Trek IV- when it was painted all white and with all the lights on. *shrug* And it's still a parody bridge.

However, elsewhere it's been mentioned (Can't remember where off the top of my head) that the Kelvin's supposed to share a bridge set with the "Kobyashi Maru" training bridge set. So it's possible this is supposed to be a training bridge, and the 'Real" bridge will look a little more conservative. Hopefully it'll be less funky than what we've seen so far.

if the enterprise is brand new, kirk would not be captain of it and would not be aboard the ship, when he get the enterprise the ship was not new since it got 2 captain before him and pike was just before him.

hope they don't screw that fact.

but i read somewhere that it was kirk that was in command of the entreprise?

or is it both so they will show when pike was rescuing some one and get radiation and paralyze after that and kirk getting command of the enterprise?

since they show the enterprise in dry dock getting build or receiving some major refit?

Who's to say that they're going to stick with the original TOS story line for Pike? One would assume they are, but you can't be too sure with Trek. Nothing is sacred, anymore.

I just hope the story for this new trek is GOOD.

I'm fine if it doesn't conform to canon... afterall, I feel more loyalty to SFB's universe thru SFC than paramount's vision of events. If the new movie launches something I'm interested in, I'll support it.

However, if the new movie follows the trend of science fiction recently, it'll suck, and story will be sacrificed for over-the-top special effects. Hopefully the studio isn't cramming nTrek with tons of effects now...

tons of effects are great, look forward to that stuff.  But it has to support a good story.  Eye candy is nice but that isn't what sticks in your mind about it.  I don't hold my breath that the story will be good (they haven't been good for awhile now), but I will be going to see it to find out.

As a 20-plus-year fan of Trek, I am ambivalent about the upcoming film. I can't help but question the motives of the studio/producers/director - it seems to me that dollar signs and self-importance seem to be driving this project, and not an appreciation of - or desire to resurrect - a once shining franchise.

But that's a whole other story.

So, regarding the U.S.S. Kelvin - from a "Treknological" standpoint, I do not think it was a wise decision to place the secondary hull above the plane of the primary hull (saucer). The position of the navigational deflector exposes the top side of the primary hull to projected radiation. In the event of a catastrophic failure, I could see a significant portion of the primary's top decks - and the bridge in particular - being destroyed.

That's not any different than having the deflector below the saucer - if it were to blow up or it emits radiation (which hasn't ever really been stated before), then the bottom of the hull is blasted/irradiated just as thoroughly as the top would be.

If you ask me, I'd prefer having the thing over the bridge to keep all those pesky rocks and torpedoes from getting through...

If the Kelvin is a one-nacelle DD, then I guess you can throw out some of Roddenberry's rules he set up to block Franz Joseph's designs.

My take is it is a revamp of the series to bring in a new younger audience that will be around for another 30 years, us old folks are not the target market anymore so you have to make it shiny and new, lots of action, low on plot (it just gets in the way of action as you have to slow down to have a story).

Actually, the navigational deflector does emit radiation - it is this projection of radiation which deflects particles (thus preventing them from striking the hull).

Typically, the lower decks of the primary hull would not contain crew quarters, but rather cargo holds, laboratories, and sensor arrays. Crew quarters generally would be located on the upper decks. Thus, long term exposure would be minimized. Granted, the location of crew quarters might not make a difference in the event of a catastrophic failure, but there would still be the issue of prolonged and/or accidental exposure given the location of the deflector on the Kelvin. Of particular concern would be the exposure of the bridge to such radiation. Also, the navigational deflector is not capable of deflecting torpedo strikes - that would be the job of the force-fields (shields).

Incidentally - and this is totally out of left field, so don't take it too seriously - why the "Kelvin"? I imagine with a name like that, it would be a science vessel. If it was, and if we were to follow the characteristics of previous strarship design, I imagine the science suite would be contained in a hull all its own, with navigational sensor (and engines) as far away from the suite as possible.

Kelvin because all of starfleets ships are explorers first, combatants second, as has been seen over and over again in the different shows.
even the late tng ships Ent-E, Akira, Defiant, etc are still fully equiped to do exploratory work.

BTW, you had the Freedom-class that was one nacelled before the Kelvin on screen wise

The deflector's emissions could be projected well in front of the ship. More like a spot light than a flood light

I call that and raise you a Saladin-class destroyer on the monitors for the early trek movies. This was the first one-nacelle DD, long before TNG.
