Mod for SFC OP
« on: May 19, 2009, 12:15:06 pm »
I'd like to create a mod for SFC OP, but I don't know where to start with that. I want to take out a few of the races and replace them with some other races from another gam I like. But I first want to know how to even get started.

The first thing you should know is what you can and cannot change(modify).

You can change the ship/station/planet models and names, weapon names and graphics, race names. But you cannot change the in-game ship/race GUI pictures, or add new weapons. There's lots of restrictions with SFC games, so make sure you know exactly what can be done and cannot. I've seen too many people that want to make a mod of xxx, but later only to find the base game engine cannot be modded in desired way.

For example, you want to replace one of the pirates with SW Rebels. But in the end you will still see the pirate pics here and there because they cannot be changed.

Well, I wanted to replace.... say the Hydran with a race from a game I play called WarHammer 40,000. I wanted to replace the Hydran with a race called the Eldar, the Federation with the Imperium of Man, the list goes on. Thanks for that bit. I just need to know how to get all of that changed as I am a noobie with modding. My older brother figured it out, but I still don't know how to do all of that.

Yes, hopefully, but that is still a long ways off.

I know, but I am going to try and add a new ship UI this week and see how it goes.  It will be my second try, I only did three of the seven main assets last time and I think I might have had an offset set wrong on the last try.  Hoping this one goes better.

How exactly do you add new ships?

If you google "ShipEdit" and "Eagle Eye" (the people that made it), that is a nice, easy program that lets you add, edit, and view much easier than with Notepad or Excel.
