SFC1 - possible solution for Win10
« on: November 26, 2015, 08:09:40 am »
qwixter from the GoG forums has proposed a simple fix for SFC1 on Windows 10, which doesn't require software rendering or windowed mode.

Quote
This might be premature but I finally got through two skirmish missions where I did not crash, then I attempted a mission. I ended the mission after 12 minutes because I have no idea what I am doing, but it did not crash on me.

Previously, I would crash within 1 to 2 minutes of starting a skirmish mission. I was able to use hardware rendering at 1280x1024 even.

What appears to have fixed things is changing the mouse section to the following values in the sfc.ini file. I suspect the async might be enough. As I said, this is might be premature, but I no longer see random flickering and such things now.

[Mouse]
async=0
hwblit=1

If you can find the OLD custom missions for SFC1 I enthusiastically recommend THE QUANTUM FACTOR.

It and The Repair Roundevous are IMHO the quintessential SFC1 missions.

I no longer have SFC1 or the customize missions or ships. Maybe Panzergranate has them?

Amazing how tweaking mouse settings on sfc.ini made every sfc game on windows 10 work!
Microsoft solved a lot of compatibility issues with older games in windows 10.
They are really making a big effort on making it the best windows version ever!

Indeed. It's sort of the last place you'd look. Usually it's incompatibility with excess RAM or the 64-bit nature of an OS, sometimes too new drivers.

Man, SFC1. Brings back some memory's. I had it not long after it came out. Used to play at Mplayer all the time back then. And on dial-up.. lol. Loved the old turnys. Don't have 1 anymore, not sure what happened to the disk... But I still play OP and loved the then so much I have not upgraded to 10 yet. Didn't want to lose playing OP but I'm seeing it Does play it seems. I have 7pro and it has always played great on it. I have been to gameranger a few times and played.

SO, is it OK to upgrade to 10 and still have our SFC-OP work? And to post here you have to fill out a bunch of things at the end here. lol. Love it. But many folks don't know the answer to everything, lol. I do. I watched the original Hitch Hiker guide way back. It was like 6 hours. Loved that  one.

Yes, Both SFC1, SFC2EAW, SFCOP, and SFC2CE plays well at Windows 10!
You just need to install it in the right place and tweak the mouse settings on the SFC.INI.

In my case, installing all of these to "c:\users\d4v1ks\Documents" made them all work perfectly!
And i use these sfc.ini settings in all. Its works for me.

As far as SFC goes, yes. But I don't think I can recommend it before MS fixes some pressing matters (saying from first-hand experience).
