I always love seeing stories about feathered dinosaurs ever since a friend asked me how accurate I thought the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park were and I told him they should have been fluffy (with feathers or protofeathers). He didn't take it well, in part because his wife had nick named him Fluffy. It was only a few weeks later that I was able to show him a Scientific American with feathered dinosaurs on the cover. He hated to admit I might be right.

The theory that the dinosaurs were more related to birds than reptiles was around for a long time before Jurassic Park. I feel that some were more reptile while most were probably more avian.

Up to that time I hadn't seen suggestions that they shared feathers with birds. What I had seen was that birds were derived from dinosaurs and the assumption seemed to be that beaks, feathers and warm blood were features acquired after the split. I could easily have missed other theories of course. Never saw a picture of a feathered dinosaur before that SciAm issue either.
