How can I set up a D2 server via LAN?
« on: January 21, 2003, 05:49:01 pm »

I would like to run a server over my LAN.  If anyone could tell me how I could go about doing it, I would appreciate it.

See the following thread on the old forums, it may help...

Thanks.  I just looked over that and didn't understand it very well.  I don't think it would work for me, but thanks anyway.

I don't have a free computer to use as a server, so I can't do it.  So, oh, well.  Is there any other way?  I have two computers connected via cross-over cable.  I guess I'm foolish for asking.  Thanks, anyway.

Is either one of these two PCs connected to the internet?
If not, then you're definitely out of luck because the D2 server
needs to be able to connect to the WON directory server.

If your LAN  is connected to the internet through a router
then the proxy server is not necessary.

BUT, as I understand it you cannot play from the same PC that
the serverplatform is running on - so you would only be able to
play from one PC anyway, in which case you may as well
open it to the internet so that others can play.

Bottom line - if your LAN is not connected to the internet
it can't be done.

Is there a way to tell the D2 clients where the server is via .GF file editing?

Either comp can connect to the net via 56k.  However, as was mentioned, I would only be able to play on one computer if the other is the server, thus defeating the entire purpose.

Not that I know of (could be though...).

If we had a copy of the WONDirectoryServer software then we could run it locally
and edit the client WONServerSetup.gf to point to it (as well as the ServersSetup.gf
on the D2 server). I think that would be the only way a completely local server could
be run, but how likely are we to get that serverkit?
