I hate compuiters!!!
« on: May 09, 2005, 10:26:30 am »
I am really beginning to hate this thing.  Really.  Now, my Norton has been stripped off, my windows installer won't work, and the stupid computer tells me that I don't have authority to download files to fix things.  So, how is your day going?  I've about decided that I am not getting another system until Fisher-Price makes one.

I'm going to write my congressman and try to get a law passed that hackers have their gentiailia removed and served to them on a stinking bun!  With no mustard, either!  Gah it annoys me that we have people with such low standards and morals in the world, who think it funny to harm others.
I'd love to meet one one time!  I'd simply enjoy the priveledge of beating him senseless.

Can I hazard a guess that you ran into another virus??!?  Or are you still dealing with the one that you thought you removed.  Honestly that this point I think the best thing to do is to reformat/reload your hard drive.  I know it is a pain in the @ss, I've had to do it way too many times myself.  But with what you are looking at, it is the only thing I could suggest.  I know this sucks and wish there was something more I could do.  If you have any questions feel free to ask.

If you've got cash to spare - pick up a new HD, and install that one with the old one NOT on the system.  Get patched, antivirus antispyware etc - then put the old HD in (but NOT as boot drive), and scan away.

At the risk of sounding like an ass, Angel slayer, have you considered getting a mac?  You can't Play SFC, but most name brand games are on the mac.  Also, no viruses, no spamware, no malware, etc etc, it's considerably more secure than windows, easier to use with alot of nice features.  The apple community is very open and helping, also, unlike the PC community at large, where places like this tend to be a very small safe haven for those with PC issues.  The point?  Though we are lucky to have kind hearted people on these forums, most people using PCs cannot find the type of help we have here.  The mac community, though, will help you out in a sinch.
Low end laptops start at $999 at apple, with discounts for students, educators, government employees and veterans.

The new mac mini starts at $499, and will work with your current keyboard and monitor.  If you have a CRT, though, you may need an adapter.  Not sure how much they are, i think less than $20

On the PC road, store data on a second HD.  STOP USIING EXPLORER.  Get firefox or something.  Maybe netscape.  Make sure you have a third party firewall installed and activated.  Don't leave you puter on the net when you aren't using it.  That's all I can think of right now.
Good luck

Sorry Clark, Don't think Half Life 2, Far Cry, Doom 3, or any games by EA run on a mac ;) However, Solitare might. Oh, and freecell! Freecell is great.

You sure?  I don't care to bother to look since these are all games I am uninterested in.  I do know they had Halo 2, which I was interested in.  I thought I saw Doom last time I was at the apple store, and half life as well, but I didn'tlook clsely, so I don't know the versions.

Did a complete overwrite and restore, and downloaded protection.  Once again, thanks guys, but WillWeasel came through again.  He is just finishing.  Gotta love slave labor.  I'll have to buy him a soda later for this.

Me... I love sports games (madden, NBA Live, etc), so I need windows. I also play a lot of HL and HL2 engine games (CS, etc), as well as freelancer. I need windows :P

Haven't had much time for games lately, but I'm more toward the strategy games end.  I like SFC, so I'm a bit bummed it isn't on the mac, but I'll live, since I can't seem to stop playing it once I start.  Other than that, gimme one of the civilization games, and I'm a happy camper.

Well you know, If your mac is fast enough, you might be able to run a windows emulator. I heard they were making some real process with that. You should at least be able to run SFC1, or 2 on that, shouldn't you?

I don't ever see that happening, the transition between WinXP to Mac would slow the emulator down too much.  That doesn't even take into account the processing power to run a game a full tilt.  WinXP is a resource hog on it's own, now Win2000 Pro... Hmmm that might have a better chance but trying to run a game through two operating systems and a translator is going to really hard to pull off.

Right  now the issue isn't processing power, but the lack of graphical support MS has put into VPC.  I have enough power to run SFC1 on my iBook, I estimated, but MS installed a very very generic GPU support, that does not take advantage of any of the graphics features that macs come with.  In any event, the GPU support is so weak I can't even launch the program.

Aw that sux...

And Javora I was thinking more of like a Win 98 emulator.

VPC (Virtual PC) is useful, because there are several versions available- even among the ones that are current products.  Right now, I use VPC on my iBook with Win2kpro, but have considered getting my hands on XP as well.  You can run as many versions as you like, as long as you have hard disk space, so If I so chose, I could load my old copy of windows 98.

I'm going to write my congressman and try to get a law passed that hackers have their gentiailia removed and served to them on a stinking bun!  With no mustard, either!

Sethan's tricks to make sure this doesn't happen again:

Assuming you have a broadband connection...

1. Get a router - there's nothing like having any incoming packets you don't request, dropped, to discourage hackers.

2. Get a good Antivirus package and update it religiously (or set it to autoupdate, and scan at least once a week).

3. Install Lavasoft's Adaware, and update and run it any time your system so much as hiccups.

4. Use Firefox or some other third party browser.  Whatever it is, keep it updated.

5. Use Thunderbird or some other third-party Email program (I use an ancient copy of Netscape).

6. Don't surf porn or download Warez.

I haven't had a virus in years.
