Please pray for my wife! She was just diagnosed with cancer.
« on: December 15, 2011, 11:55:01 pm »
I thought about where to post this, but seems most of my friends are all in the D2 forum. So I wanted to say it here.

Last week my wife and I found out she has a T3 N2 M? breast cancer that is her2 negative grade 3. Its a stage IIIc cancer that today showed a blip on the pet/ct scan. We are hoping the MRI tomorrow will show that it is not metastatic cancer that has spread to her liver which is almost always fatal in the short term.

My wife remembers my late nights playing with you guys and all the time we spent designing servers for us all to mess around on. Ahhh the good ole days. I wish I could back up the clock and relive some of it. I miss you guys.

Special thanks to Stephen Smith who has been a life long buddy that has always been there for me to talk to about anything. God Bless you bro.

Have a merry Xmas or happy holiday peeps. Life is what you make of the time you are given.

Good vibes coming your way, man. Hope it turns out to be manageable...

Dizzy, I am so sorry to hear about your wife. My wife had cancer a few  years ago and we managed to beat it. She's been cancer free for three years now. I hope you and your wife can do the same!

Good luck my friend!

Diz

Dizzy my friend,

As you may remember I had Stage III colon cancer in 2003. I'm still standing.  My life changed. I have battle scars, but I have endured.  I am still working, I am still husband to my wife of 31 years, I'm coaching a chess team that is an absolute juggernaut this year, and I've been Teacher of the Year at my school  in 2005 and this year.

There have been setbacks, annoyances, and frustrations.  But in 2003 my wife put two notes on the bathroom mirror.  The first said, "Mission Statement:  Don't Die."  The second one said "...anything else we can work out."  And that's how it's been.

Your journey will be tough.  You must prepare for war, and to be the cheerleader and strength for your wife.

I'd be happy to share my thoughts and experiences  either here or by PM.

God Bless

Mazeppa hit the nail on the head when he said Your journey will be tough.  You must prepare for war, and to be the cheerleader and strength for your wife.

Your going to find inner strengths you never knew you had brother.

Thanks for the responses, guys, and for the PM's which have been helpful. We think she now has Stage IV. There was a small blip near her liver on the Pet/CT scan, and so they did an MRI of the Liver and it showed a 1.2cm mass. The Biopsy and Port is sqedueled for Fri. She is pretty saddened by it.

Stand strong for her man, And remember to lean on us if you need to.

Remember, Stage IV means it may have only spread to one other organ, and can still be treated successfully.  We will be keeping the prayers going for ya.

Berte's singing TOS Closing

She hates me now for making her do that... But once I heard her singing in the next room to my trek music as I was blasting an opponent away with phasers, I vowed to record her singing this, hehe. After all these years finally got it!

And thanks for the prayers.

Mrs. Ronin fought through it a few years back. My dad is currently engaged in his own battle on the front lines. A dear friend recently walked her mother through the battle zone as well, making particular use of the Gerson technique, which seemed to work miracles for her.

You, your lovely bride and all those around you will be in my thoughts and prayers. May you have the strength to hold her hand through it all, a smile on your face. May she always see in you the hope for a better tomorrow.

All my best to you and yours, brother.

P.S. Just watched the video you posted. Now, in addition to wanting to be there for you, I imagine the heart of every man who has looked at this thread is tied to your wife. Please thank her for sharing that bit of herself with us all.

Someone knows how to embed this so it shows as a pic instead of a link, fix it for me pls. thx! And thanks for the prayers.

What a lovely voice!  Truly, an amazing, brave, talented woman.  Well done getting her to marry you, sir!

Sadly she hasnt done anything with it other than karaoke. Other than HS musical practice, thats raw talent. I'll see if I can get her to sing something else on camera. Mb this is a good way to get her on video for once...You got a request?

Edit: Finally figured out how to copy the url properly. So if you missed it from the 1st page, here it is again.

If she has a favorite, maybe she would grace us with it? When I heard her voice I immediately thought of...

ANDREA BOCELLI & KATHERINE JENKINS-I BELIEVE+LYRICS

... this song. With her lovely voice, I think she could handle the soprano part very well. Let's see if we can get Andrea Bocelli to swing by the house to practice with her.

Ronin what a great idea! I think I'm gonna work that. Brilliant idea! I had heard of how Katherine Jenkins was a good singer, but never knew just how good or how good looking. Checked her out on youtube and I'm impressed.

Ok, so update, Berte's chemo regimen starts Wed. Actually tomorrow, cuz she is gonna start taking anti side effect drugs b4 the chemo. Seems these holidays have been dragging along so slowly... we wanted to start chemo weeks ago...

Berte just lopped off all her hair in anticipation of it falling out. She's quite cute with short hair now. And I asked her about doing some more vids... she's open to the idea, so I got my fingers crossed I'll be able to upload another video tonight. ;) She loves the feedback btw., and all your posts. TY for your support. It means a lot.

Please pass the word to your lovely bride that my hair is now roughly 1/8th of an inch in length. Can't do much else, but I can sure paint my wagon the same color.

Warmest regards to you both...

Dang men, what is it with our women folk. I wonder if I should start a support group for men, who have wives with Cancer, as I know the time will come , you will want a place to vent.

Of course Prayers to you also Crim.  I can't believe how many of us have been touched by this Horrible disease.

I went ahead and started a Facebook page for anyone who needs support, or can offer advice having been through cancer.   https://www.facebook.com/groups/357355417614383/  It is a closed group for right now, as I know sometimes It can be difficult to discuss. Please let me know if you wish to be added either here, or you can email me at Stephen.sirgod@gmail.com

Sirgod, I am not sure whether I can be of any help, but I am willing to try. My wife had cancer, but she recovered and is doing fine.

I have never felt so useless and lost in my entire life. Raising three girls on my own scared the hell out of me! Thank God Karen is ok now.

I do have one observation to make. I realized something during that time that I should have known. There are  things you can fix and things you can't. If you lose your job, you can get another job. You can't fix cancer or replace your loved ones.  Remember what's important in life. Work has it place, but it is replaceable. Your family isn't!

don't have to be a christian to pray for someone.  But does help to not be an athiest.

I am not a Christian either, so for those who feel they can't pray, I am sure just keeping her and the others mentioned in this thread in your thoughts is a good thing.

*edit*
Hmm, seems to be that my comment was misread.  I was not making a statement of anyones religious state.  My statement was a general one, that it helps to be religious to pray. (spiritual is actually a better term)  There was no left hand comment meant towards anyone.  Sorry for any confusion.

Glad it all worked out for you, Indyshark. I feel kinda the same. More like I'm swimming in molasses.

Wifey is doing good. We noticed the tumor has already shrunk quite a bit after only one treatment. Many more to go then a scan to see if the liver cancer is also shrinking. ::crosses fingers:: So far no bad trips down side effect lane. Its not been easy, but manageable. She is doing very well. Almost like she's not even sick. Thats the weirdest part. Its so surreal.

Best wishes to everyone that has someone going through this. And I thank all those who have posted here, and frey for putting up with this thread in this place. Thanks bro.

Sorry I missed this request - my wife and my prayers will be with you and your family going forward.

If she is allowed to she may want to start significant daily vitamin D3 supplementation. Recent research has shown that D3 supplementation can significantly increase communication between cell groups - which can aid in repression of cancerous cell groups by neighboring cells. I take 5000 IU daily as a preventative measure as I work inside all day. I would reccomend at least that level of supplementation for her if possible. I wouldn't go over 10,000 IU a day - although she may want to do that level for a week or two to help jump start her system's extra cellular communication.

She will also want to take a k2 supplement once a week as well - if she does supplement the D3 - to prevent any unwanted calsification in the blood stream.

Optimized extra-cellular communication between cell groups should have an anti-cancer effect on the body - however most doctors are not up on the latest research - please be aware that it could increase communication between cancerous cells as well - however in theory their should be no expectation that this will increase their effectiveness - in fact it may cause them to become less aggresive as well.

http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/news-archive/2008/does-vitamin-d-treat-cancer/

My aunt recently passed due to sudden aggresive stomach cancer and I regeret I didn't get to pass this advice to her when she was first diagnosed.

Srry to hear bout your aunt, Lono. Thanks for your advice.

Got disheartening news from the doc the last time we went. She explained to us once the cancer hits the liver it's the end game. It doesnt really ever go away at that point. Even if the tumor shrinks up and dissappears, and she has the surgery to remove the ovaries to get rid of the estrogen producing element this cancer likes so much, it could come back in 3 months or 3 years. 90% chance she said. So here's hoping that 10% chance works out! God knows I skirted around on 10% skill and 90% luck in most the games I won against you guys on dynaverse. Hope my wife has my luck too.

Speaking of the dynaverse, what is the current sitrep?

On the theory that every little bit helps did you see the recent reports on Aspirin vs Cancer?

Quote
Aspirin can reduce the risk for cancer-related mortality and can reduce or prevent the risk for distant metastasis, according to 3 new studies published online by The Lancet and The Lancet Oncology.

Aspirin was shown to reduce the risk for nonvascular death in all trials in The Lancet study authored by Peter M. Rothwell, FMedSci, and published online first on March 21.

Researchers in the United Kingdom reviewed 5 large, randomized trials of daily aspirin use versus control for the prevention of vascular events. Of 17,285 participants, 987 had a new solid cancer diagnosed during mean in-trial follow-up for 6.5 years. Those taking daily aspirin had a reduced risk of cancer with distant metastasis for all cancers.

In the study, aspirin also reduced death due to cancer in patients who developed adenocarcinoma, particularly in those without metastasis at diagnosis.

“That aspirin prevents distant metastasis could account for the early reduction in cancer deaths in trials of daily aspirin versus control. This finding suggests that aspirin might help in treatment of some cancers and provides proof of principle for pharmacological intervention, specifically to prevent distant metastasis,” the authors stated.

Rothwell and other researchers also reviewed the short-term effects of daily aspirin on cancer incidence and mortality. Those results also were published by The Lancet online on March 21. The researchers found that allocation to aspirin reduced cancer deaths (562 vs. 644 deaths) in 51 randomized trials comparing daily aspirin use with no aspirin use for prevention of vascular events.

In the March 21 online edition of Lancet Oncology, Rothwell and other researchers also reported evidence for benefits of long-term aspirin use for certain types of cancer. In case-control studies, regular use of aspirin was associated with reduced risk of colorectal cancer.

“Similarly consistent reductions were seen in risks of oesophageal, gastric, biliary, and breast cancer,” the researchers stated.

Dizzy - thank you - and thanks for the update - I know we all are with you in spirit during this difficult time.

Although not all things are in our control - one thing to remember is that 3 years - these days - can bring about new therapies we could only have dreamed about a few years ago. My heart really goes out to you guys and I am praying for a miracle to bless and heal you both. Please let us know of any needs you both may have - so that we can come together and offer help in any way possible.

May god give you both strength and peace during this challenging time.

Thanks guys! I'm starting to grok it, hehe.

Its been a long road, but Berte may have had her final chemo treatment today. The good news is that complete remission is expected. She responded well to chemo. We will know for sure after the MRI and PET scan 2 weeks from now. Bad news is that once it hits the liver (breast cancer) it never goes away. It will come back. 3 months, 3 years, it will come back and we will be back taking chemo again. So this is our new normal.

I pray for the day when a drug or therapy can kill it completely. Till then... we wait... and watch... and hit it again with chemo when it returns. And hopefully, if we are lucky and stay ahead of it... that it doesnt get away from us and overtake her. Prayers go out to everyone that has a loved one suffering from this insidious disease. Thanks for your support.

So for the moment, we will celebrate remission.

Great news to hear from both of you!

Please remember to consider keeping up a daily vitamin D3 supplementation of around 5,000 IU - everyone - as that does seem to be paying off dividends for many people both diagnosed with cancer and not.

(of course consult with your doctor on this - tho keep in mind many are not totally up on all the latest science yet)

Also make sure to take some vitamin K2 supplement around once a week to prevent unwanted minor calsification in the blood stream from the D3 supplementation.

I feel we are very near to a rennisance in cancer treatment - and continue to pray that God will give you all the strength and your doctors the wisdom - to be able to control and one day cure this difficult disease.

For now let us all enjoy this great victory!

 :)

Right now the grass and Tree is insane, up here in Oklahoma.

Sirgod, I still live in Tulsa, so keep me in mind for this summer.  LOVE to meet you and Dizzy!

I was close to you twice in September and March when my chess team was at Carl Albert High and Del City High for chess tournaments.  Did not have any way to drop by, had a van load of kids and chess parents in convoy.  (My team is state champs!)

I can probably talk him into that. We have been talking for a long time about getting back together, I haven't seen him myself in a long time, and I would love to visit with Pesty also. Only talked to him once or twice on the phone, and that was when he was at the gas station with Frey.

But yeah, any excuse to give Frey sh*t is always good in my book. :P

Have photos to post of Frey riding my Bking WAAAYYYY too fast in the driveway...

Hi karnak. Howya. Not outta the woods yet. I have been getting about less than half the sleep I should and never when I need it the most over the last few weeks agonizing on whether to stay with the planned removal of the ovaries to blunt the estrogen based cancer, or go back and see the doctor for a new large mass growing in her breast in the same spot where the last one was. Its been only 4 months since she was finished with her last chemo therapy and the doctor was surprised the lump came back so fast and so large... We did mention it to the doc as a precaution before the surgery and she is thinking it is a cyst.

Regardless, we chose to side on the side of statistics rather than risk another chemo round before we had the chance to remove her ovaries. Women with estrogen based cancer respond much better to treat and have fewer recurrences and longer remission times when the ovaries are removed and removed they got last friday. She is recovering nicely and only missed a day of work. So she will be headed back to the cancer doc to see what we need to do next. Probably another chemo round. Too bad too. My poor wife was feeling better and just landed her dream job. She's working as property manager for an A class luxury home apartment complex.
I pray god will be merciful this time.

Greetings lifeforms! Been a long time since I dropped in. I pray you are all doing well. I see SFC:CE is out. WOW! I hope to dl and enjoy some of the action soon see how many times I have to get my ship handed to me before I remember how to play this game, hehe. Currently I'm caught up in a bit of a nail biter and wanted to update this amazing thread full of support, well wishers, and friends who have helped me thru this.

Cant sleep atm. Wife has a petscan tomorrow, had an mri saturday. The mass in her breast returned after being reduced to 'Near Resolution' and having the liver cancer evaporate. But looks like its coming back. I can only hope its a fatty deposit, but we know it isnt. Dont think this tamoxofin is working. Sad thing is Berte landed an awesome job as apartment manager at an A class property and it gives her purpose. I hope she can do chemo and keep her job, she really loves it. We dunno. We dunno anything... Im a wreck. Shes doing better than me, lol.

Well, I miss you guys, but looks like SFC:CE will see us reunite before long. Long live SFC!

Attached is a Halloween pic from I think 2010. I'll update with this years pic later. Happy Halloween all!

Got the word from Stephen and came over here to let you know my prayers are with you and your family Dizzy.  Sorry to hear things may have taken a turn for the worse, but never stop hoping for the best as hope has some pretty powerful healing and pain and stress reduction abilities, as does faith.   Tell you wife for me (if she still remembers me) that I said she looks even hotter as a witch as she did in that older pic I complimented.  If you weren't a good friend I might try to track her down to woo, lol.  But with her as in SFC piloting you are a very lucky guy and that luck, some hope, some faith and a whole lot of good loving from a good women to you and a whole lot of good loving from a good man to her will get the two of you through the tough times.

Edit:  Just did some research and managed to find your wife's facebook account and left her a message as well, I hope she remembers talking with me on Voice coms before and doesn't think it is some unknown weirdo who was flirting with her and wishing her a speedy recovery, and realizes it is a known weirdo instead.

The Mamogram came back normal. That has me wondering if it is scar tissue or fatty tissue... Thats what Im hoping Sirgod. Do not cancer clusters appear as brighter calcification areas on a mamogram? Still, despite that, our Dr. ordered an MRI of the Liver and the petscan. So we will probably have results today...

I guess you have to take the good with the bad. Its back in her chest and includes a few Lymph nodes. So its back to chemo. Luckily it hasnt reappeared in her liver or anywhere else. The doctor seems confident that after another round of chemo she can put berte back into remission.

She's Tough. She's taking chemo, working 45 hours a week and STILL manages to every now and then get into the kitchen and do some amazing baking. Her chemo is slow going. The tumor in her Liver is gone for the moment... and is shrinking in the breast... A few more treatments and she may be done with chemo for a while... 2nd Remission may be in sight, but the last one was only 4 months. Too short to recover fully. But damn, she's a fighter. She is inspiring. Thank you for the prayers! Keep them coming! And I'm looking forward to blowing some of you up on SFC CE!

Anyone who puts up with you has to be tough Dizzy.   :P

Glad to see she is making good progress even if it isn't as rapid as you would like (it never is that fast), as long as progress is steady you will get there.

Dizzy, I missed this entire thread... I haven't really been around here for several years.

I, too will pray for your wife.  See, my father... and I'm an old guy, so imagine how old he is... has what technically is "incurable" cancer, of the colon to be technical, though now, he no longer has his colon, to be precise.  However, he as been on chemotherapy, alternating with breaks when the scans come back good, as with your wife.  But he's been doing this for... wow, about ten years or more.  And, while he looked twenty years younger than his age before his operation, he really does look his age now, but he is still driving around all over the place, cooks essentially daily, gripes about his favorite teams and players with gusto, eats well and eats essentially whatever he likes, and almost lives as if he hasn't any cancer.  Only going to the bathroom and taking chemo reminds him of it.  Of course, after his more extended breaks from chemo, somewhat suspicious signs pop up in his scans, but taking the drugs again clear them...

... and he's a fairly old guy.

Your wife, from your video, is a strong and young looking young lady, apparently with a great attitude (as has also my pops), and I suspect that whether or not hers will be "curable", it may at least be totally manageable, will little disturbance to her lifestyle and little effect on her lifespan.  A gift from God Almighty- our incredible, very efficacious, and wonderful modern medicine and medical technology.  I am glad to hear and thankful that her condition is responding well.  God grant you a long, wonderful time together.

Thanks for the continued support, guys... Means a lot. E_Look, what a great post man. Thank you. I'm never going to look at statistics on the internet again... If we went by those she'd have less than 8 months to live. We are now starting to look at the longer term of management and seeing a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel. Hope your dad stays cranky and fiesty for a long time. Thanks for the post. I'll have berte read it.  ;)

You know the old saying, there are lies, damned lies, and statistics.

Don't give her any stress more than is unavoidable.  I believe stress does not help it... there may be soft to somewhat firm medical evidence of this.  And, check with the oncologist as to what foods may or may not be be a good idea.

Been a while since I've posted. I was planning on participating in the mission testing part with old friends, but got some bad news that quickly sidetracked that. Berte is having what her doctor explained is a mixed response to her current treatment. The cancer in her breast and lymph nodes are shrinking, but it metastisized to her bones in about 3 or 4 places and came back in her liver. She broke a rib where her bones had been weakened but has gotten better.

We are meeting a specialist that runs the experimental drugs department of the start center and will see if berte is a candidate for advanced measures to bring this under control... I'm not yet giving up hope that the cancer can be put into remission... I just keep praying... How are all you guys doing?

Berte got in on a promising new drug regimen that stops cancer cells from replicating. Its just a pill you swallow. How simple and easy. Thats the direction all drugs should go with cancer. Take a pill and it makes it go away...

Mods, unsticky this at anytime. I appreciate the prayers that have been given to berte and they have gotten us past the rocky road to where we are now, which is a lifelong battle with this disease with no end in sight and I'm ok with that. I can deal with the uncertainty... Its the finality of it all I have to not think about that that does me no good. I'll post updates when I have them. Thanks for that prayer ravok.

It didnt even go two months. Spread to more bones and her brain. She is having Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde mood swings. Experimental drug did nothing but let the cancer have a field day. Cant win them all. I got her garden finished tho. She planted it...

thx for asking guys. She is so strong... The doctors decided to give her an ethanol injection into her liver never center to deaden it. So now she cant walk well... But the pain from her extensive liver metastasis is now tolerable. She was given 2-3 months left to live about 3 weeks ago if we did nothing. So she is taking some kinda high powered Doxil chemo that may do something... We just dont know. It is knocking her on her ass though. Its a nasty drug. Too bad we dont have the $4k a month for that Burzinski character in houston that people say can cure almost any cancer... When it sounds too good to be true...

I have no idea how much time I have left with her. It could be weeks, days or hopefully this drug may put her back in remission. Who knows... I'm hoping at the very least we have some time to shoot some videos of her for the future. I suggested making videos for the kids for things like Beth's 1st date, prom, graduation, her 1st broken heart... The kinda advice only mom can give. That would be nice to have to show them when the time is right. I hope we are able to do that.

What Im really hoping is that she is able to again take a deep breath and feel well enough to sing. There are a few dozen songs Id like her to record. We've been married for almost 18 years and I have so few recordings of her angelic voice...

Thx guys. Thx Ronin. You beat me to it bro. Was just about to post... I was talking to Frey earlier about reinstalling sfcop to play with my teenager. He used to dabble with the game way back when... Cant beat Sfcop as a tactical naval engagement game. Its just too damned awesome.

So with berte... poor thing is on a rollercoaster ride. For my part I feel like I got that buck rogers vampire sucking my lifeforce away. Its so draining. But berte is hanging in there... 'baby steps' she says as she gets slightly stronger and better with each passing day. She is so brave. So inspirational. They are moving her from ICU to progressive care. So shes still in the fight.

Got the scans back. The radiation to the brain was a home run, but there isnt much of the liver left. Her eyes turned yellow two days ago... but got white again today. There isnt much left to do but take it a day at a time now... With all the prayer so many people have been giving her I'd have thought the cancer would have been gone by now, heh. There's still hope tho.

Would a partial Liver transplant help her at all? I'm not sure about a match, but I'd be more than happy to have mine checked, and if it is a go, I'd do it in an instant for you two.

I tell ya, from what I've been reading on Face book, she is the strongest woman, I have ever known.

I am sad to say, Berte, his wife, passed away last week. I held off on mentioning it, as he has not said a word, except for his face book friends.

I do feel, that it may be to painful for him to approach the topic, but I do ask, as a fellow gentleman, that we remember him, and his loss. Berte, was a great woman, with the voice of an angel. Hell, she had to be great, to put up with Dizzy for so many years.

Repost:

Berte's celebration of her life will be held at First Baptist Church of Universal City on Dec. 21st, 2013 starting at 11am with a catered reception afterwards at the church. Our family hopes to see you there.

We have lost way too much of our dearest blood this year, ToastyO, Capt. Mike, and now Berte. Give your family an extra hug, and give thanks for the time we have with them.

So sorry for your loss, she clearly was a strong women to have fought so well for as long as she did.

I'm glad you were able to share a part of her with us, we will all do our part to remember her.

Thank you all for your support. I know Berte put up with me through my marriage knowing I was hopelessly addicted to this community, it's members and this game. She allowed me to pour quite a bit of my time and effort into this and even became friends with a few of the community members. We had a long and mostly happy marriage for almost seventeen years. She would appreciate the outpouring of support everyone here has shown. If there's anything my angel in heaven can look down upon us and do is to make sure none of us are touched by this disease. I pray none of you have to experience it.

I want to especially thank Frey for being there when I needed a friend. And for the kick in the ass he gave me right when I needed it. Maybe someday I can revisit this community and try the game again. I hope that someday comes sooner than later. Thank you all again and I think now we can unsticky this. ;)  Happy trails on this wagon train to the stars and I'll see you on the other side.

Dizzy I am sorry for your loss.

I remember very vaguely many games of you in sfcop and sfc2.

Miss you guys, and I can't express how sad it makes me someone I once struggled to lay photon torpedoes on has had such a loss.

Oh hell... I come back here for the first time in years only to find this... Dizz, I'm sorry I wasn't around. Cancer sucks. My dad had a recurring bladder cancer that he got into remission twice before, after being diagnosed with another recurrence, he died of pneumonia instead.
