Been a while, something I whipped up in the past few days.
« on: November 15, 2003, 09:59:42 am »
One of my fav's from back in the day.

The Federation CVA.

I wanted to keep this one to 3200 or less and I'm close to that but I'd like to cut in a couple torp launchers and possibly the fighter bay doors.  So it will be decision time this weekend.  After Atrahasis came out with his smooth decked ncl and nca I of course had to spend a few polies and make the long spine of this ship match!  A lot of the hull is one piece so that cost me a few faces but I like em that way as it may save me a texture sheet which will more than pay for a face or two.

Of course the SCS will follow.

And....just to whet your appetite.  Dispatches have been intercepted that have indicated that another independant shipyard is making a competing CVA design....

Well not so independant as one might think.

As always, happy to see a WIP posted by one of the starship model crafters that has given so much to the community. Need I even say this looks good?

Status report for the SFC community.

-Wicked Zombie; never left and went on a streak of some really fun new models.
-Atrahasis; returns with a vengence! Polishes up his fleet and having fun with new stuff.
-Dark Drone; comes home and sparks the GAW project!
-Hollis J Wood; Who woulda thunk? Glad to see this man again
-Thu11s; returns from extended holiday!
-111wallace111; annonces a new homepage!
-Anduril; see preceeding posts. Great modeler and yer basic good guy.
-New people doing amazing stuff. FireSouls OP+ project, Desty Nova, I Mudd, Smiley...

Did I miss anyone? Likey... excuse please.

Just how good is this? I would guess that we couldn't hope for much better.

PS. Klingon Fanatic still hoping for his Melak.

A it's a testament to your 3 year old ship and it's longevity that it's taken me this long to make a version of my own!

I'll just edit this post to add a pic of a very subtle tos paneling effect I'm putting on my saucers now.

Sweet work! Ive been working on a phase 2 varient of that ship (still havnt decided on a nacelle pylon config yet) im gonna need to change the registry on it i got it as ark royal ncc-2203. i dont have a source for carrier names. awsome work.

Yes it does seem like the "Old School" is returning.. now all we need is moonraker

A, I like the TOS registry style, but for this ship you may (I'm not recommending it per se but throwing a suggestion out) want to use the TMP-style-font because even the SFB material / art portrays the more advanced ships with that type of font. Or you can do both and see how it looks. Either way it'll be awesome.

PS You spelled "caesar" wrong! :P

Not a bad suggestion A.

I'm already considering using the TMP symbols for the hull pennant and changing the bridge dome to the Phase 2 one anyways.
You know I had it right the first time then I looked at a shiplist someone posted with the feddies on it and then changed it....

Got burned.

Those are good ideas too. Was it an oversight on Franz's part that his design for the DN did not have the bridge turbolift shafts? A ship that big, as well as the carrier here, need at least two shafts.

If you give it the TMP pennants and fonts, it would fit more into my theory that the TOS-style was an entire design philosphophy that existed right alongside the TMP design philosophy, and that the two styles were not just "old" vs "new".

Also, another thing I've been thinking of re the TOS-style deflector dishes, is that in the middle you have a ring of "blue glowie" similar to the way they did it with the def dish on the Galaxy. It would indicate an advanced design and yet still retain that TOS flavor. What do ya think?

Yea that would look sharp. maybe do the class prototype "Napolean" in TOS and the "Caesar" TMP as above...

Im using the latest Chris Jones SFB shiplsts  as my refernces. Imported it in Excel spreadsheet along with the fighter list. Then I color coded all fed ships divided by classes. Works great!

Atra, on the Federation class Dreadnought, the bridge is embedded in the middle of the saucer, where it can't be easily hit. The structure on the top is another navigation dome similar to the one on the bottom of the CA's saucer. Hence no turbolift shaft.

Hey Anduril, you gonna make fighters to go with this? I'd really love to see F-14's and A-20's!   Ooh, you could do a SCS (since this is the Julius Caesar) and make a version with F-111's on mechlinks!

This question never occured to me before... Since most Federation ships have that largish glowing (window?) in each quandrant of the saucer... what are those?

And needless to say, that is shaping up to be a fabulous looking CVA.

I belive those are early sensor arrays not windows. I know thier placement doesnt make any sense. then again lots of things on TOS ships didnt make sense Still we put em on to retain the "classic" look of the TOS era ships

Yet more sensors? Well, I suppose you have to have a broad spectrum of sensor devices to have as many senses as you can in deep space. I guess it's like sight, hearing, smell, touch... etc. Hmmm... Do starships smell? If so what do they smell like? Can you purchase the scent to get that new starship smell?

Gosh, I'm sorry. This will be the last OT comment on my part. We now return you to a master at work...

I say they could be reaction control thrusters. Yes, I know they don't in any way fire off to the sides to be proper reaction control thrusters, but it could be that the vectors are manipulated with force fields. Ever wonder how a ship like the Enterprise (any of the Enterprises) applies reverse-thrust with its impulse engines, when the only impulse engines it has are at the back and none at the front? The only......ONLY......way to be able to do this is if the impulse exhaust is re-vectored at some point outside of the ship so that it traces the path of a square bracket " [ " using force fields. If impulse exhaust can be re-vectored like that, I don't see why reaction control thrusters can't.

Going with the late TOS era and the probable mixture of TMP ships coming into action line of thought I added the Phase 2 bridge and a bit of Excelsior'ish detail around the b and c decks.

This is called a "thrust-reverser" in aircraft engines.  Basically, it's a pair of clamshell-like bits that close aft of the nozzel, directing the thrust forward.  Good call, Atra!  A hard sci-fi answer to treknobable.

Your reaction control thrusters could also be imagined to be electronically-scanned like a phased-array radar antenna.

The impulse engine "exhausts" become "intakes" during reverse operation, the entire unit tractoring or sucking the ship backwards.

Ah yes I thought you might ask that..

The Schtupp Suck Theory of Reverse Impulse Propulsion (or SUCKRIP):

The impulse coils act as attractor plates for interstellar hydrogen (and in later impulse technology subspace anti-neutrons) sucked in at near lightspeed, where Newtonian two-body physics explain the relative movement between the ship and the hydrogen nuclei. Impulse engines glow blue during reverse operation.

Heck- SUCKRIP works so good, they shoulda' put the engines in front...

LOL Suckrip!

One thing wrong with that though........if partciels are attracted INTO the impulse engines form the back, they'd be tranferring their momentum forwards, which would actually give the ship forward thrust and not reverse thrust. For reverse thrust to happen you have to have thrust exhaust going to the front of the ship.

But that is a novel idea.....

Actually, I don't see why our two ideas couldn't be COMBINED........that the impulse engines can suck as well as spew with re-directed exhaust, but just not at the same time.

Sorry for hijacking your thread, A.

A number of things have transpired to keep progress on this ship at a snails pace.  Not the least of which being I finally rolled up my sleeves and did a format and rebuild of my drive.  I'd like to meet up with the person who thought it funny to make the idgsearch/searchV homepage hijack.

Drive needed a reload anyways since the box has been slowing down but one day I'll run into one of the little pieces of trash who spend their lives in mommies basement doing things like that.

So, not much new to report other than some basic detail going on.

No problemo on the Hijack A.  I'm more frustrated at the fact I spent 8 years living in a world of Acronyms, considered myself one of the kings of them and I can't come up with one even remotely humorous to add to this discussion....

Two things...

First, that looks marvelous. You have a few fans here, of whom, I am one. Undoubtably it will be the new reference model for this class.

Secondly, that hompepage hijack thingy... fixed that for a friend of mine that I had given my old computer. It was accomplished with a little script that instals itself in the windows folder and executes upon every boot. I changed the name of the extension to test it and all was well again. That little script was deleted immediately after. If it crops up again look for a visual basic file under C: or Windows and you may have found the offending script.

By the way A, the Impulse Engines are supposed to be back of that ledge that sticks up, back of the saucer......it has great potential to scorch the hull, imo, but hey that's they way it is.

Already dealt with the impulse deck.  Raised the height of the deck by a few meters to fit the engines on the back of it.  So now it's almost even with the top of the B deck but it still works I think.
Progress is slow but not quite snails pace.  But at least it's all mapped out except for the inevitable pushing, pulling, and repositioning of the mesh.
Had to throw on some of Lord Schtupp's most excellent phaser textures too.

I never did send my condolences for the the loss of your cousin.  Lily was a unique and gifted woman and is missed by all.

Are you gonna stick that sesnor dish on it or come up with somethng a bit more advanced looking?

Oooo... two versions. One with the standard dish on a bracket. The other with a WADE array! How hard could that be? Perhaps take from Atrahasis's Siva. I'd like it.

I'm not really sure what it is supposed to be but I'm considering it an array.  Maybe an AWAC's type to allow the CVA to seriously take charge of what is going on.  That and the fact they wanted it painted copper suggests a system other than power.

Right now the standard dish is below.  I've been playing with the textures a bit.  Right now it has copper around the outside and a blue center that is textured similar to the TMP ships dishes.  If I go with a hybrid I will probably remove the antenna.  I have also considered one in the front of the saucer itself.  It will probably be the last thing I do.

Nooo anything but putting a dish at the front of the saucer!

I like that idea of the standard dish-on-a-stick, but make it more stylin', like giving it a TMP glow in the center.....

I agree with Atra, a dish on the front ptobably isn't the way to go. The WADE units like on Atra's Siva model might look good, but otherwise I'd go for the dish hanging down underneath the saucer on a mount.

Well technically the balconies are already there.  It's more down to me coming up with a cool texture for the pad areas.

If you are looking for real balconies you'll get moist when a certain unnamed source gets around to finishing up his CVA variant......

Maybe a little more built up in the center like the phase 2 Ent as depicted in the "comic book" ads. Also a cool dish is the "dish gun" that the Rebels had on Hoth defending the trenches. The dish part was built up nicely on that.

Sure, that will work for the traditional hanging dish. I have no doubt you will get the right color ballance for it.

How about this for an off beat idea... Since some have a problem with the aestheticly challenged hanging dish, how about this for a varient... take the lower sensor dome and replace it with equal diameter tube with that same dome at the end. Then describe a forward facing parabolic, that is reduced in heigth, so that the tube would not need to be long to accomodate it. Walla, a deflector dish and a sensor dome in one without that odd looking lower dish. I would kind of like to see if it might be a visualy interesting alternative. Just an idea.

Imo, the radiating glowy spikes just don't seem right. I was thinking basically a TMP-Enterprise-style glowing deflector, but smack dab in the middle of the dish, about half the diameter I would say. "Gridding" it would be the copper lines of the dish. That way you have more or less a direct hybrid of the TOS and TMP style defelctors.

Either that, or add a glowing ring with a radius of 1/2 the dish, and add a small glowing center, like the Galaxy-class deflector.

If you go for a hybrid dish with no center antenna a'la Atra then thatd be cool, but I think that you would have to build a small instrumention pod behind it to make it really look right, this assemby being mounted on a short swept-forward pylon. I would save this for a  Phase2 type upgrade however, as this would alter the profile of the carrier too much from the original design that you have obviously taken great care to adhere to.

My idea for this problem is to build a conventional TOS dish with center antenna but do a small ring of glow at about 1/2 radius out, with many fine radiating lines inside this ring kinda like a turbine engine. Perhaps use an orange Phase2 type of glow instead of blue.

I agree with Atra regarding the spokes not looking quite right but if you used orange instaed of blu then i think that would look better.

Sorry, don't pay us no mind but thanks for asking for opinions. That version of the dish looks right. However make it so your are happy with it. Your'e not known for making many bad calls so the final version will be an instant classic as we all know already. Granted, I am not a fan of the hanging deflector dish but I will fly that CVA and be very happy to add it to the model folder.

No, its not that the blu looked bad, just that the orange looks a little more TOSish Makes sense too, as orange is lower on the energy spectrum thus implying lower power/older tech.

Isnt there a canon precedent for an orange dish or just where did that come from anyway???

TOS style registry, for me too. On the dish, maybe have less contrast between the orange dish and the yellow splines. A bit more "blended"?

I'm TOS all the way, but we do have an acute shortage of SFB based TMP CVAs (also BCVs). Should you decide to do a TMP refit, this is a class that is needed, IMO.

Last three days have consisted of work 8-5, come home eat, get paged at around 6:30, go out and work till around 9:30, come home, go to sleep and get paged around midnight, go work till about 2:30, come home sleep till 6:30 and repeat.  One long sentence since that's what this week was in essence.

I did some detail work on the fighter pads and other places but not enough to warrant another image so I'll post this.  I think I have the ship scaled to around 450 meters in this shot.  I wanted the saucer to be 4 decks and I think the rest scaled nicely.  The warps are a bit bigger than the CA's which is how they should be.  IMO at least.

The mini has a thick saucer and after playing around with different scales and such it came out to basically twice the thickness of the CA's saucer.  So when I go with the fact that a CVA is supposed to provide support for the fleet logistically as well as tactically I figure it needs lots of room as well as a larger number of personnel, proportionally, when compared to the direct combat ships.

As always these opinions are my own and are usually slightly wacked.

Time has been critically short and my little Christmas list of ships is even shorter.  So Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all and let me know what you think.

Sorry DC I missed your reply/question here.

When I get done with the SCS version of this ship and the Rom V4 I plan on pulling out the DN to update its saucer texture to go with this and the Connie that I've reworked a bit more over the past few months.  It will have the new warps, some chages to the bridge dome/bc decks, properly configured rings behind the deflector and a couple other things that my fever/flu befuddled brain can't recall at the moment but I did make note of them in the readme.  All that at 100 some faces less.  I had made the alternate registries avail for an earlier version of the Connie so I still have them in the PSD file.  When V2.5 of the Connie comes out I'll redo the zips of the three sheets that need to be swapped out for the individual ships.

As to a BC variant off of the DN that's no a bad idea as a BC doesn't need to be a mutated CA.  Kitbash away and show us the results.  It might just alleviate my need to make one.

I'm going to try and come up with a believeable design for a variant of the DN with a weapons suite on the bottom of the sec hull so the DN variants are covered.  In my shipyard at least.  I'll probably have to ask the master engineer Lord Schtupp for some advice on that first.

If I rambled I'll apologize now.  Delirium doesn't rock.

no worries... though I could just have been asking you anyway since I have your DN.... In fact it may work out easier with yours... guess we'll see.....

Oh, if I didn't say so before... Great work my friend....

The bump it deserves.

The subject came up recently and I thought this deserves to be bumped for anyone who may have missed this. Like me... and I was trying to keep tabs on it, too.

SENSE OF HUMOR ALERT:

[Star Wars: Episode IV; scene where Luke Skywalker is asking his Uncle Owen about Ben Kenobi...]

Luke: "You know that V-4 unit that's missing in action, I think it was owned by Anduril. You don't think he meant the Anduril who has the Galactic Fringe website and who frequents the Taldren Forums displaying his model making prowess do you?"

Uncle Owen, "You stay away from that crazy old wizard. Anduril disappeared a long time ago, about the same time as Terradyne, Atrahasis and P81."

Luke: "Anduril knew Atrahasis, Terradyne and P81?"

Uncle Owen: "I said drop it Luke!"

************************************************************************************************************************************************

Please Anduril release the FASA Romulan V-4.

Andurils version was never released. However Red_Green aka James Formo did 2 outstanding versions of this ship and you can find them at SFU.
 V4 TOS version
 V4 TMP version
Enjoy
